Abstract
Notarized documents including land sales, slave bills of sale, court records, affidavits, estate and succession inventories, and statements of debt that were certified in 1830 by Charles Derance, notary public of Natchitoches Parish. A land sale conveys the property of Leman Chaler to Jean Baptiste Metoyer. A court proceeding and a statement of debts concern the seizure of property belonging to Athanase Lassize by Nicola Gracia. This seizure occurred because Athanase, a free man of color, had fled Natchitoches Parish without repaying his debts to Gracia. Over half of the documents are in French.

Abstract
Chiefly petitions, subpoenas, public instruments of protest, and bills of exchange for legal cases against Auguste Metoyer, a free man of color, in the State of Louisiana between the years 1830-1846. The legal documents chronicle Auguste Metoyer's financial and legal difficulties stemming from debts owed, primarily to white planters and businessmen, during and following the economic depression of the late-1830s.

Cases against Metoyer include: Thomas H. Kiddu & Charles Head vs. Jesse Smith & Auguste Metoyer; Terence Chaler vs. Birtt & Metoyer; Sherbume & Campbell vs. Auguste Metoyer; Narcisse Prudhomme vs. Auguste Metoyer; Ambrose Secomte vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer; the Union Bank of Louisiana vs. Auguste Metoyer, Joseph Augustin Metoyer, and Joseph Metoyer; and William Porter vs. Auguste Metoyer & François Gassion Metoyer.

Of note is a personal letter to Auguste Metoyer from Nicolas Charles LeRoy, a school teacher from Versailles, France who once taught school in the Isle Brevelle community. In the letter, LeRoy discusses setting up a three-way meeting between themselves and J. B. Adelé and sends his regards to Auguste Metoyer, his wife, and his little girl.

Ten of the twelve items are written in French, with eight of these items containing text in both French and English.

Abstract
The folder is comprised of tax receipts for Adeleda Metoyer and invoices and receipts to Adeleda and Toussaint Metoyer for cotton, books, whiskey, sugar, coffee, and various other goods. These accounts include the following merchants: Jean Conant, Anthony J. da Silva, A. L. Metoyer, P. E. Durant. Also included are receipts to Adeleda Metoyer from Reub White for railroad freight, a 1937 invoice to Selén Metoyer, and an April 23, 1854 receipt belonging to Pantaleone Morine.

Abstract
Primarily papers of Baptiste Meullion, François Cheval Meullion, Bellazaire Meullion, and Alphonse Meullion. One group of papers relates to Baptiste Meullion’s 1833 application for a mortgage of $5000, including, correspondence, application and supporting documentation of assets and collateral comprised of confirmation of his previous land purchases and extracts of the acts of sale in which he bought enslaved persons. These records contain the name of the slaves and from whom they were bought. A few accounts of Francois Cheval Meullion with local merchants and a letter appointing him commissioner of roads for a part of Saint Landry Parish are found. Bellazaire Meullion papers comprise a stock certificate in New Orleans, Opelousas, and Great Western Railroad Co., financial correspondence from Bellocq, Noblon and Co. (a New Orleans cotton broker firm) about her cotton and purchases, a few personal letters from friends and relatives (Louise Lemelle, Alice Dessauer, and unidentified authors) that relate family news, and her amnesty oath after the Civil War, and a petition (ca. 1890) filed by her nephew Alphonse Meullion to the U.S. court of Claims on behalf of her estate for livestock and provisions taken during the Civil War. Also present is a list of the property of the widow of Francois Cheval Meullion confiscated by the U.S. Army in April 1865; it appears to be related to her succession as well.

Alphonse Meullion papers are primarily personal and business correspondence including from Cornelius Donato about collecting money for Meullion, neighbor Madelaine Stelly inquiring about news of her brothers, J. B. Firan regarding the possibility of opening a grocery store in Jeanerette, La., and his current teaching position. Of note is a letter (1869 March 17) from Alphonse Meullion's cousin Gustave Donato about black voters, Republican politics, and the suitability of Joseph Balquet for office.

A related item is a letter from Michel Vidal to Antoine "Donat" Meullion in which Vidal discusses possible efforts underway to keep people from voting for him and plans to organize black voters, and asks for Meullion's assistance. Vidal, a native of France who came to Louisiana via Texas, settled in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish, La., in 1867. He was elected to represent Louisiana's 4th Congressional District as a Republican; he served 1868-1870.

Inventory of stock for Dupré, Metoyer & Company, a mercantile house and general merchandise store in Isle Brevelle, Natchitoches Parish, La. The business was owned by Emanuel Dupré and Jean Baptiste Dominique Metoyer, both free men of color of creole heritage. An entry of 1873 records a mortgage due to Oscar Dubreuil. The back portion of the book includes song lyrics, addresses, and a list of family ages and deaths written in English. The account book is written in French.

About the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL)

The Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) is the front door to Louisiana's digital cultural heritage. Members include public libraries, academic libraries, museums, and archives from arcross the state.

Currently, there are 25 participating institutions in the LDL. Each institution contributes the digital items and the descriptive text for their collections.
