Abstract
Business records of Jean Baptiste Meullion, a free man of color, including bills of sale for his accounts with Debuys and Laune, Arnaud Carraby, and S. S. (Simon?) Bernard. Includes a slave bill of sale for the transfer of Mary, age 33, from Theophilus Elmer. Also present is a letter and map from M. Pellechet to T. F. Mezieula (J. B. Meullion?) confirming the accuracy of his land survey. Documents are in French except for slave bill of sale.

Abstract
Two French newspapers, L'Autographe (November 1864) and La Presse Illustree (October 1874), with articles concerning Victor Séjour. L'Autographe is a tabloid format newspaper, (numbered 193-200), reproducing excerpts of writings and signatures of famous persons associated with France, including government officials, writers, composers, and others. A brief phrase and autograph of Victor Séjour--described as "un dramaturge sous lequel se cache un véritable auteur dramatique"--is printed on page 195. Other persons represented include Alexandre Dumas Fils, Henri IV of France, Hector Berlioz, and Antoine Étex. The first page of La Presse Illustree includes an illustration of Séjour and his full page obituary. In French.

Abstract
In this indenture, Francois Gallaud (described as a young free man of color of 14 years of age and a Creole of New Orleans) is sponsored by his father, Louis Gallaud (described as a free man of color), as an apprentice to Dutreuil Barjon (described as a free man of color) to learn to be a joiner and cabinetmaker. In French.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.

Abstract
Text, 1800s. Wild Sports in the Far West by Frederick Gerataecher [sic], Chapter XII, Louisiana, New Orleans and Home. A part of one chapter of the book Wild sports in the Far West; the narrative of a German wanderer beyond the Mississippi, 1837-1843 by Friedrich Gerstäcker. Includes passages related to Bayou Sara, German settlers, Jews, Pointe Coupee Parish, Gerataecher's hotels, Levees on the Mississippi River, a slave auction, the treatment of slaves, "Guinea negroes," an alligator shooting, the flesh of the alligator and prejudices against it, the habits of alligators, scenes on the Mississippi, Gerataecher's fellow passengers, sharks and sickness and death onboard. The account ends as the ship comes in sight of Cuba on the way to Europe.

Abstract
In 1806, Will and testament of Maria Olivares, widow of Joseph Galvez of New Orleans. She declared that she was born in the Canary Islands, the legitimate daughter of Andres Hernandez and Josefa Olivares. She was a resident of Barataria, where she owned land and some sixty head of cattle. Her properties included two enslaved persons, a Bautista (a male of 55 years of age) and Maria (a female of 35 years of age), and the latter was to be freed after the death of Mrs. Galvez. She appointed as the executors and universal heirs of her estate Maria Dauberville, widow Bouligny, and Luis Bouligny. In Spanish.

Papers of Jean Baptiste Meullion's descendants include the voter registration certificate of Alphonse Meullion and a letter from Bellocq, Noblon & Company to Belarie Meullion regarding the price of cotton. Other documents comprise a price list published by Beraud and Gibert, commission merchants of New Orleans, as well as the death notice of James Rankin Todd (1804-1885) of Ireland.
