The hurricane destroyed the island and claimed at least 200 lives. Today Last Island is a series of islets known by the French name Isles Dernieres.

Abstract
Text, 1891. An account of storm of August 1856 which submerged Last Island, a pleasure resort in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the Louisiana coast. Many vacationers were killed, as the storm hit at the height of tourist season. Account is told by Reverend R S McAllister of Thibodaux Louisiana, who was vacationing there at the time.
