Abstract: This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal commemorating Edward Jenner designed by Abram Belskie in 1971 for the Medallic Art Company [MAco 69-14-20]. Edward Jenner (1749-1823) was an English physician and scientist who was the pioneer of smallpox vaccine. He is often called "the father of immunology". -- This 44 mm diameter medal is cast in bronze and was issued by Presidential Art Medal, New York (N.Y.). The obverse of the medal reads: EDWARD . JENNER | 1749 | 1823 | PREVENTION OF SMALLPOX | © ABRAM BELSKIE 1970 | with a clothed bust of Dr. Jenner facing center right with an depiction of a flame. -- The reverse of the medal reads: VARIOLAE | VACCOMMAE . 1798 | FIRST VACCINATION 1796 | and has a rendering of a seated physician immunizing with a naked child, and a cow in the background. -- Abram Belskie (1907-1988) was an artist and sculptor that combined two disparate disciplines – art and medicine. He was a medical sculptor for life-size scientifically correct anatomical models, in addition to being a numismatic sculptor. He was a faculty member at New York Medical College. He designed the "50 Men of Medicine" series (1969-1974) for the Medallic Art Company, New York. A historical review of notable scientists and doctors from Hippocrates to George Minot were selected by medical historians. The 50 medals were struck in silver and bronze (MAco-69-14-1 thru 69-14-50). He has dark brown hair receding at the hairline, a full mustache, and brown eyes. He wears a dress uniform jacket with gold-braided epaulets, double row of gold buttons with eagles, and white collar. On his left chest he wears a medal showing a pelican superimposed over crossed bars with stars and the inscriptions: LA DIV and A T. The medal is suspended by a red and white ribbon. Behan was born in New Orleans on September 25, 1840, and died in the city on May 4, 1928. He was mayor of New Orleans from 1882 to 1884.

This commemorative medal for Albert Calmette is by the French sculptor, Georges-Henri Prud'homme (1873-1947). The medal has the text: "INSTITUT.PASTEUR | Dr ALBERT·CALMETTE" "ALBERT CALMETTE | MEMBRE DE L'ACADMIE | DES SCIENCES | ET DE L'ACADÉMIE | DE MEDECINE | SÉRUM | ANTI | VENIMEUX | VACCINATION | ANTI | TUBERCULOSE | B.C.G." (bronze-0.8 x 6.75 cm). The obverse has a bust portrait of Albert Calmette with small text . G . PRVD'HOMME . (incuse). The reverse bears dedication and depicts a microscope, cobra and flora. Biographical information: Léon Charles Albert Calmette (b.1863, d.1933) was a French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist, and an important officer of the Pasteur Institute. He discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, an attenuated form of Mycobacterium used in the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis. He also developed the first antivenom for snake venom, the Calmette's serum. In 1919, Dr. Albert Calmette took up the appointment of Sub-Director of the Pasteur Institute of Paris. Prolonged trials of BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guérin) vaccine showed it to be safe and vaccination of very young infants born of tuberculous mothers commenced in 1921. Abstract: This is an image of the obverse and reverse of a high relief medal (bronze, 30.46 mm). This commemorative medal is from the Medical Discoveries Medal Series. There is a clothed bust facing center right of Fleming on the obverse with the inscription: ALEXANDER FLEMING | 1881-1955. The reverse has the inscription: DISCOVERED PENICILLIN around a rendering of the the antibiotic penicillin. -- Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955), a Scottish bacteriologist, made a chance discovery from an already discarded, contaminated Petri dish in 1928. The mold that had contaminated the experiment turned out to contain a powerful antibiotic, penicillin. The introduction of penicillin in the 1940s, which began the era of antibiotics, has been recognized as one of the greatest advances in therapeutic medicine. Abstract: This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal honoring Ambroise Paré by Alexis-Joseph Depaulis (1790-1867) a French medalist as part of the Galerie Métallique des Grands Hommes Français. -- The obverse has a clothed bust facing right with the inscription: AMBROISE | PARE | (signed DEPAULIS F. under truncation). The reverse has the inscription: NE | A LAVAL | EN M . D . IX . | MORT | EN M . D . XC . | GALERIE METALLIQUE | DES GRANDS HOMMES FRANCAIS | 1819 . -- Galerie Métallique des Grands Hommes Français produced a large series of medals over a number of years by leading medalists of the day. They were struck mainly between 1816 and 1826. All the medals were produced with a portrait of the celebrated person with simple biographical information on the reverse. The date of issue being dated simply in arabic numerals. Abstract: This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal (cast in Vienna in 1834) commemorating Andreas Liber, Baron de Stifft (1760-1836), a Prussian General and medical doctor, who was the court physician to Emperor Francis I of Austria and Freiherr von Stifft. This medal was designed and cast by Josef Daniel Boehm (Austrian sculptor and medalist, 1794-1865), who was the court medalist and the director of the Imperial Mint at Vienna in 1834. The medal has the bust of the Baron on the obverse with the head to right with the inscription: ANDREAS | LIBER | BARO | DE | STIFFT. Beneath the bust is the maker imprint: I. D. BOEHM F.
