Abstract: In this indenture, Margaret Getwood (described as a free mulatto girl of nine years of age, born in Lexington, Kentucky) is sponsored by her mother, Nancy Getwood (described as a free mulatto woman), as an apprentice to Stephen Vail to learn to be a needleworker and house servant.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.

He informs her of his regiment's position and mentions that there are '40-60,000 soldiers' in and around their current camp. Additionally, he describes the conditions of their camp, including the fact that the place is almost completely devoid of women and that they are forced to kill wild hogs for meat. In the postscript, he entreats her to 'not show this letter to anyone but burn it for the sake of one Poor Soldier'.

He informs her that his regiment has moved 'three or four times' since he had last written, and describes an encounter with the enemy while en route to their current location. He then provides details of the fatalities suffered during the conflict and remarks on their success stating 'I think this war will soon be at an end for from all appearances we cannot get a chance to have a fight as the Yankees are retreating every day'.
