Abstract: This study compared various pre-race behaviors of 1023 Thoroughbred (TB) race horses with their performance at 144 races over 14 race meetings at Delta Downs race track (Vinton, LA). There were 46 variables evaluated of these TB racehorses by 4 experienced horse persons. The pre-race period was divided into three sections: presaddling (BSAD), which was from the time the horse entered the saddling paddock until the saddling, saddling (SAD), which was from the time from saddling until the jockeys prepared to mount the horse, and post-parade (POSTP), which consisted from the time the jockey mounted and rode the horse in to the post-parade. These behaviors were classified as calm, nervous, or ready and they were also scored numerically from one to five. The variables BSAD, SAD, and POSTP were all evaluated from the body language of the horse. Walking or prancing, ear position, sweating and lathering between the legs, and head movement were all accounted for when evaluating the horse's type. Then a behavior score between one and five was given to the behavior type based on the amount of excess movement that occurred with the horse. A behavior score of one was considered a horse that did not exceed a walk or did not move while in its stall. A behavior score of five included a horse that went to the extent of flipping over, rearing, and excessive pawing and described as extremely active. The horses received a separate behavior type and numerical score for BSAD, SAD and POSTP. Following completion of the race, the horses fmish order and type of finishing (running, tired, or pulled-up) was recorded. Statistical evaluations were performed in SAS with a chi-squared and general linear model analysis performed to determine statistical differences. Horse classified as nervous during BSAD were more likely (P < 0.001) to finish the race tired (68%) compared to calm or ready horses (34% and 35% ), respectively. Being nervous during BSAD significantly (P < 0.006) decreased the horses chances of finishing first to third (17%) compared with calm or ready horses (36% and 38% ), respectively. More (P < 0.0001) horses that were nervous during SAD fmished the race tired (63%) compared with calm or ready horses (31% and 36%), respectively. Also, horses that were nervous during POSTP were more likely (P < 0.004) to finish the race tired (59%) compared with calm or ready horses (34% and 35%), respectively. The BSAD, SAD and POSTP behavior score did not affect finish type (P < 0.4, P < 0.14, P < 0.76) or the percentage finishing fourth or better (P < 0.18, P < 0.56, P < 0.26), respectively. Horses with no chain or had the chain used as a regular lead shank were more likely (P < 0.01) to run first to fourth (64%) compared with horses with a chain used over their nose or in their lip (47%). Horses with rear leg wraps only had a significantly greater (P<0.05) percentage (42%) of a first to third place finish and a significantly (P<0.05) lower mean finish place (4.7±0.1) when back leg wraps were present. Therefore, pre-race behavior along with the assessment of certain equipment procedures can impact the outcome and performance of thoroughbred racehorses.

Abstract: View of the Hall of Fame race horse, Pan Zareta. Pan Zareta, winner of 76 races, was know as "Queen of the Turf." She made her first appearance at the Fair Grounds in January of 1916 and quickly became one of the most popular horses ever to run in New Orleans. She died January 19, 1918 of pneumonia and is buried in the infield at the Fair Grounds. A horse barn, a horse and rider, and workers at the track are visible in the background.

Abstract: The diary of William T. Johnson, a free man of color, records his daily activities for the years 1848-1850. The entries primarily discuss Johnson's business activities, family life, and news in the Natchez, Mississippi community. Many of the entries include cash book entries of Johnson's daily transactions. Other topics include enslaved persons and runaways in Natchez, regional and national news, horse racing, hunting, and a cholera outbreak in February of 1850.

Many of the entries detail Johnson's land dispute with Baylor Winn, a free man of color who was Johnson's neighbor and the man he accused of shooting him in 1851. These entries include a November 22, 1849 entry in which Johnson describes Winn as cutting down timber ""...perfectly regardless of lines"" and a Wednesday, January 23, 1850 entry in which Winn put a stop to the land survey William Johnson was conducting.

Johnson often describes his business and social activities with other free people of color, including members of the Hoggatt, McCary, and Miller families.

Johnson's business and social activities with the local politician, orator, and slaveholder, Colonel A. L. Bingaman, are also discussed in the diary.

Entries of significance include a Monday, November 19, 1849 entry describing the explosion aboard the Steamboat Louisiana, and a Saturday, March 4, 1850 entry that describes the sale of a free woman of color and her three children, whom were formally freed by Mr. Reed.
