Abstract
The scrapbook kept by Mary Macrery Britton Conner of Natchez, Miss., contains photographs, newspaper clippings, and other items on former family slaves and their descendants, African-American baptisms, and African-American social conditions and culture, primarily in Mississippi. Mary Macrery Britton, daughter of Audley C. Britton (1822-1894) of Britton & Koontz Bank and Eliza Macrery (d. 1907), married the prominent attorney, Lemuel P. Conner Jr., in 1888.

The unpublished manuscript "The Negro in Louisiana" is a work begun by the Dillard (University) Project in 1942, an arm of the WPA's Federal Writer's Project. After the dissolution of the unit, Marcus Christian maintained and edited the document in hopes of eventual publication. It is reproduced here as an annotated transcript, with original typos, chapters, and paginations preserved.

He describes activities and sports he took part in in the community and through his church and school. He discusses some of the prominent leaders in the Baton Rouge African-American community. Jones gives a detailed account of his life, beginning with his childhood in West Feliciana Parish, La., through his high school, college, and law school education. He describes his army service in World War II, his position as the first African-American warrant officer, and his involvement the D-Day invasion. Jones shares recollections of racism, segregation, sit-ins, and protests in Baton Rouge and other Louisiana cities. Abstract
Letters written to John McDonogh by a variety of persons primarily documenting his business negotiations. Included are letters by Augustin Malet and his daughter Marie Therese Malet, both free people of color, regarding the sale of their property. Also present are letters from affiliates of the American Colonization Society (John Hanson, H. Teager, and G. Schmidt) recording McDonogh's collaboration with the group. Some documents are written in French.

Abstract
Lesson Abstract: On December 16, 1803 Pierre-Clément de Laussat, Napoleon's Prefect in Louisiana, issued a proclamation that upheld the French Code Noir in the Louisiana Territory. Although Laussat was to hold the position of Prefect for only twenty-one days, this proclamation held significance for all Louisianans. Under French law, the Code Noir defined the political, social and economic lives of African Americans. Investigation: How did the legal status and treatment of African Americans in French and Spanish colonial Louisiana compare to the legal status and treatment of African Americans in the United States?

Abstract
Bonds of free people of color, who were permitted to reside in the First Municipality of New Orleans, 1843 May 8-1844 April 10. Fifty documents bound together. In the decades prior to the Civil War, government officials of Louisiana became more and more concerned with what they perceived as being the disproportionate growth of the number of free people of color, as Louisiana law designated them, in the total population of the state. The Legislature consequently sought to restrict the size of the free black population by enacting laws of increasing stringency. Early state laws prohibited the immigration of free blacks from other states or the Caribbean islands and declared that those already in Louisiana who did not fulfill certain residency requirements were ineligible to live in the state and had to leave. Many remained, one must presume, for in March of 1843, an Act of the Legislature allowed free people of color, who had been living in Louisiana continuously since 1838, to remain in the state subject to their securing an authorization from their local government body. In May of the same year, the Council of the First Municipality of New Orleans added restrictions of its own with its own with an ordinance that required the petitioner to post a bond of $1,000.

A few documents concern the purchase, education, emancipation, and repatriation of enslaved persons to Liberia. Stereographic photo of a bagasse burner. Four african-american children (and possibly adults) are in an old wagon cart. Bagasse is the dry, fibrous residue remaining after the extraction of juice from the crushed stalks of sugar cane, used as a source of cellulose for some paper products.
