Caption by Maude Reid: "The Lake Charles High School as it looked in 1905 and which local critics called an extravagance on the part of the Superintendent, John McNeese. 'The price was too high,' they said.'The high school was located way out in the country, and we didn't much need a high school nohow.' Old Humphrey's shack can be seen to the right; he was the English servant brought south by Dr. Hubbell when the Lake Charles College was built, and he remained to serve as janitor when the school board of Calcasieu bought the building. Also, note the derrick. At one time it was suspected that oil was on the land. $7,500 was the price paid for this building and the grounds."
