Abstract
Dock and shipping facilities of the Cuyamel Fruit Company, Honduras. The Cuyamel Fruit Company of Honduras was founded in 1902 by William F. Streich of Philadelphia. The Cuyamel Company was the first banana company to build railroads instead of relying on water transportation for shipping fruit to port and the first to plant its own plantations rather than buying from independent producers. Around 1907 it was purchased by Samuel Zemurray of Mobile and later of New Orleans. The company took a vigorous interest in the internal politics and foreign affairs of Honduras in order to solidify its position there. While still a flourishing company, in 1929 the Cuyamel Fruit Company was purchased by the United Fruit Company.
