Biographical Information
Marie Boidore (active 1820-1827) was a free woman who lived in the city of New Orleans.</br></br>Joseph Roffignac (1766-1846) was the mayor of New Orleans from 1820-1828. His administration was marked by Gallic-Anglo-American ethnic conflicts, with Roffignac considered a champion of the French community. Born in Angoulême, France in 1766; he arrived New Orleans in the early 1800s as a member of the French military force preparing for restoration of Louisiana to France. He married Solidella Montegut, daughter of Dr. Joseph Montegut of New Orleans, a royal surgeon of Louisiana during Spanish domination. He returned to France in 1828 and died there in 1846.</br></br>John Minor Wisdom (1905-1999) was a liberal Republican from Louisiana and a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit during the 1950s and 1960s, when that court became known for a series of decisions crucial in advancing the civil rights of African-Americans. He attended Tulane Law School and was later an Adjunct professor of law there from 1938 to 1957. The documents in this collection were items collected by Wisdom.

Affidavit of Marie Boidore, a free woman of color, that at a ball of Mr. St. Martin, Virginie Labortrie, another free woman of color, unmasked her and along with friends, beat her. Presented to Joseph Roffignac, Mayor. In French.
