Abstract: This venture began in a sophomore nonfiction writing class. My instructor, Stephany Lyman, told me that the writing in my journal (that was kept for her eyes only) was, by far, my best writing effort. I thank her for her encouragement and passion. I would not have begun this thesis without it. In my next writing class, Randy Bates mentored me in my efforts of turning my journal writing into presentable works. I thank him for his constant guidance in finding my voice, his consistency, and his persistent constructive critique. He imbued me with hope and the belief I could do this. In my Psychology of Personality class, I began to connect much of my personal experience to theory. I am most grateful to Dr. Gilda Reed for providing me with a sound basis from which to meander and for her invaluable guidance as my "second reader." She did my heart good. For the philosophical slant and for countless hours of reading rough draft after rough draft, as well as for much needed advice, correction, and general hand-holding, I give my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Donald Hanks, my thesis advisor. title: Impressions of Greece : a content analysis of student ethnographies

Abstract: This paper is a content analysis of student ethnographic papers from three consecutive years of a University of New Orleans study-abroad program in Greece. The program was developed and administered by Dr. Linda Lonon Blanton, Director of the University Honors Program, specifically for honors students, and was held during the intersession periods between the spring and summer semesters of 2000, 2001, and 2002. The student papers were written in response to an assignment for a three-credit hour course titled Traveling Distances -An Ethnographer's Journey through Greece (Appendices 1-2). The course was required for all program participants who registered in either ENGL 2398 (Special Studies in Literature and Language) or ENGL 4391 (Special Topics in Literature and Language), depending upon the student's academic level. Students enrolled in the course were required to keep a journal and to write two letters to themselves, the first of which Dr. Blanton collected, and returned to the students two weeks later; the second of which she mailed back to the United States so that the students could receive them once they were back at home. In addition, students enrolled in ENGL 2398 were required to write a minimum 5-7 page ethnography, while students registered in ENGL 4391 were required to write a minimum 10-12 page ethnography. So that students could understand how ethnographies were written, several books were assigned on required and recommended reading lists as potential models (Appendices 3-4). Dinner With Persephone by Patricia Storace, a required book, was the only true ethnography on either of the lists, but the books by Michael Carroll, Lawrence Durrell, Aris Evangelinos, Edmund Keely, and Henry Miller all had strong ethnographic elements as well.

Abstract: In recent years, the New Orleans area has fallen victim to disastrous floodings. With such a vast amount of damage and media attention, the perception of home buyers in these areas could have been adversely affected. Hence, when a home is purchased, does the existence of flood risk hamper its purchase price? This question is the basis of a study which is currently taking place under the guidance of Dr. Wade Ragas, Professor of Finance and Director of the Real Estate market Data Center at the University of New Orleans. In order to conduct this study, a few geographic areas were identified as being particularly impacted by flood damage. Through newspaper corroboration, the areas selected had indeed suffered either street flooding and/or home damage; thus providing a good source of information for this study. Three areas were selected. Area one was in Uptown New Orleans (see Figure 1). The boundaries for this area were Carollton Avenue, Claiborne Avenue, Louisiana Avenue, and St. Charles Avenue. Area 2, east of Causeway, had boundaries of Causeway Boulevard, Dublin Street, Jefferson/Orleans Parish line, and Lake Pontchartrain. Area 3 was west of Causeway Boulevard and had boundaries of Causeway, Veterans Boulevard, Academy Drive, and Lake Pontchartrain.

title: Applying moral developmental theories to fictional characters : a model for moral education for gifted students

Abstract: The discussion of ethics and morality has played a significant role in our society for centuries. Moral issues surround us on a daily basis and call for closer contemplation. Educators, parents and caregivers can include children in on this subject in effective ways. This discussion is especially suitable for gifted children since they demonstrate a heightened interest and sensitivity to the moral dilemmas around them. Using literature is one way to engage students on this topic of morality. Literature provides excellent examples of moral reasoning, enabling readers to gain a greater understanding and an opportunity to relate it to their own lives. The moral developmental theories of Lawrence Kohlberg and Carol Gilligan were applied to fictional characters of three works of children's literature: The Widow's Broom by Chris Van Allsburg, Holes by Louis Sachar, and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. These books offered an extensive range of possibilities for the exploration of moral issues. Teachers can not only have students analyze literature as a model of moral education but also can engage other strategies with these books. My personal engagement and exploration of moral themes has not only deepened my understanding of these theorists but has increased my insight into literary characters and expanded my knowledge of self.

title: Shakespeare's secular world view in Richard III

Abstract: Alternately critics have read Shakespeare's English History plays as champions of orthodox ideology, as subversive in their political stance, and even, to quote Karl Holzknecht, as "epics of unlettered men" (295), meaning, as L.C. Knights asserts, that they are totally innocent of theory. with the advent of Marxist and New Historicist criticism, however, the view that Shakespeare upholds conventional dogma in the histories and especially ideas such as Holzknecht's have been consistently questioned and often invalidated. 1 In the histories, Shakespeare does not simply reiterate the accepted political philosophy of established authority. Although he presents the orthodox view point, he does so in such a way as to reveal its inconsistencies; I would argue that Shakespeare perceived in the historical sources which were available to him a fictional construct, one which was a product of a certain system of beliefs put forth by a particular power group, and that he incorporated these sources into his plays in a way that reveals the ideological construct which they support. The ways in which social institutions such as law and religion function to legitimize power, once displayed, enable one to perceive the power relations involved in our society and upon which our society is based. The overriding perspective on the histories and particularly Richard III which this thesis adopts is that Shakespeare renders an evaluative response to historical events and to the political temper of his own time that implicitly advocates questioning established authority and challenging any doctrine before accepting it.

Abstract: The current study was to investigate how teachers' knowledge and misconceptions of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) relate to background, training, and experience. It was predicted the most significant factor was whether teacher taught in an elementary or secondary school because of training differences. Ninety-nine teachers were given a sixty question instrument. The thirty-nine questions that assessed ADHD knowledge and misconceptions were the Knowledge of Attention Deficient Disorders Scale (KADDS) developed by Sciutto, Terjesen, and Bender Frank (2000). Ten research hypotheses were tested using factor analyses with varimax rotation, the t statistic, and the Pearson Correlation. The results support two important conclusions. First, although relationships among ADHD knowledge or misconceptions and whether a teacher taught elementary or secondary are small, significant differences do exist for ADHD knowledge. Second, a significant relationship to ethnicity among the ethnicity and ADHD misconceptions exist, as does a difference in misconceptions between ethnicities.

title: keeper and the kept : intergenerational relationships in the literary production of Tennessee Williams

Abstract: Although the personal lives of many of the greatest American playwrights, such as Eugene O'Neill, Lillian Hellman, and Arthur Miller, have centrally informed their drama, the experiences in the life of Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) ripple throughout his literary production perhaps more so than any other American dramatist. In many of his works, Williams exploits certain moments, people, and/or anxieties from his own life, reconfigures them, often infuses a subtle homosexual subtext, and, in doing so, provides a glimpse into the psyche of an ever-aging, increasingly out, post-World War II playwright. Indeed, one of his greatest gifts to the stage possibly lay in his ability to extract beauty from the debris of his life. In each of his texts, one can frequently connect textual symbols, plots, and characterizations drawn from his own life, and his personal demons repeatedly surface in the angst, longing, and pain of the characters he assembles onstage. Horrified by his aging body and deeply aroused by young men, he ferociously drank, smoked, and did drugs; he was addicted to sex and rarely engaged in monogamous relationships. His family provided a near endless source of dysfunction. Each of these hardships and handicaps he made the fodder for his art. He was a nomad, a bohemian, and yet he remained quintessentially southern. Cursed with compulsions and blessed with genius, Williams brought to the stage the emotions-raw and naked-that plagued him.

The author bases his arguments and conclusions on the different literature that is available concerning the capital markets and recent economic changes of the Colombian economy, and on his own opinions. The study also makes recommendations concerning the possible structural changes that need to be put into place for the continued development of the capital market institutions in Colombia, and for the improvement of the financing practices of the industries in Colombia, so that greater sustainable rates of economic growth can be achieved.

Abstract: 1066. It seems that all discussion of any aspect of the Matter of Britain must pass through the bounds of the Norman Conquest. Indeed, Senlac Hill is the base camp from which all students must begin any exploration of the fascinating precipices of Middle English literature. Nearly one hundred years ago, W.P. Ker drew the oft-repeated analogy between the defeat of the English axemen by the mounted Norman knights and the end not only of the Anglo-Saxon period of English history and literature but also of the European heroic age, as the entire continent followed the French into the age of chivalry (4). For the most part, this transition resulted in the abandonment of the heroic narrative and its consequent replacement by the new literature of chivalry--the romance. Beowulf passed the standard of English values and tastes to Lancelot.

title: Students perceptions of business ethics : an empirical investigation

Abstract: Previous research has proposed a variety of reasons to explain differences in perceptions of business ethics among college students. This study suggests that certain 'subcultures' respond differently because (1) their own subcultures affect their perceptions in relation to the general 'culture' defined by society, or (2) they feel alienated from the mainstream of society. Society must correct the latter by eliminating any prejudice for or aoainst a particular group in the business world. Society must also indicate the value of business ethics and the conseouences of not having them.

title: Motives for service in the Armed Forces of the United States : a comparison between the men who served during Warld War Two and the Vietnam War

Abstract: Upon starting research for this thesis, I looked for evidence to show that men volunteered to fight in World War II out of patriotic reasons, while their baby boomer generation sons were forced to fight in the Vietnam War with little or no choice. I have learned that my pre-conceived notions were wrong. Men fought in both these wars for various reasons, some as volunteers, and many as conscripts. I was wrong, as many Americans are, to assume that the motives of these two generations of servicemen were entirely different. The facts are that when one looks at the reasons men served in the military during both World War II and the Vietnam War, one encounters more similarities than differences. This is in sharp contrast to what many Americans are brought up to believe.

Abstract: This paper examines the phenomenon of contemporary black Republicanism. In recent years, several black conservatives, most notably U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, have achieved prominence in U.S. politics. Their views are often antithetical to those of most African-Americans, who have overwhelmingly voted for the Democratic party since the New Deal policies of the Roosevelt Administration and especially the modem Civil Rights Movement. Black Republicanism illustrates the increasing heterogeneity within the black community. The public discourse black Republicanism has generated could reshape the fortunes of both the Democratic and Republican parties.

title: Adam and Eve on the precipice of paradise : the possibility for error in Paradise Lost

Abstract: The following chapters will explore the areas in which Adam and Eve make inaccurate decisions and the consequences which result. Adam and Eve, while remaining sinless in the prelapsarian garden, increase the potential for their fall, making it seem almost inevitable by the time of its occurrence. Authority becomes a problem because, although Adam and Eve intellectually know that she is inferior to him within the hierarchy, they do not always appear to accept this concept emotionally. These mixed signals, juxtaposed not only with a free will which allows them to make choices but also with a thirst for individual knowledge, creates the potential for judgmental errors. The garden becomes a place in which relationships are misunderstood and logic is not absolute. In the confusing environment of the prelapsarian garden, Adam and Eve remain sinless although they falter in their attempts to walk within the path that God has ordained for them.

title: Saving souls and populating polls : religion's role in the politicization of African Americans in the South

Abstract: My thesis research is focused on the factors that influence African American political participation in the South during the 1984, 1988, and 1992 presidential elections. (1) The African American population was politically empowered via the Civil Rights Movement that culminated in the 1960s. "In August 6, 1965, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. The act applied to Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina, Virginia and ... North Carolina ... (because those states) had evidenced significant voter discrimination." These states were required to eliminate literacy tests and agreed to surrender the polls to federal officials who would ensure peace and equal suffrage (Goldfield 1990, 167). Being deprived of a voice in government for so long; southern blacks quickly embraced the opportunity to exercise their new political rights. The effect on the political landscape in the South was unprecedented. According to Tate (1993), "The largest gains were recorded in the South, where the percentage of Blacks registered to vote rose from less than 31 percent in 1965 to approximately 66 percent by 1984"(p.1). With the mobilization stimulus of the Civil Rights Movement firmly in the past, why are African Americans in the South participating more now? Their participation is significant because it reveals that race is a dynamic political issue that evolves over space and time, directly affecting political climate.

title: Artificial intelligence : design of a driverless car

Abstract: In order to drastically decrease the impact of humans’ imperfection in our daily actions, automated systems have seen a substantial increase. Part of this process is to develop and implement a reliable driverless car which is a car that can operate itself without the input of an actual driver. In order to do so, it is imperative to redesign our current road infrastructure and provide a maximum of useful information to an intelligent car. This redesign will also require the codification of traffic signs, a precise representation of our traffic grid, and a highly accurate navigation system. In addition, the introduction of a new device called Perception Of Environment will be relevant in order to tackle dynamic environment which includes dynamic traffic signs, surrounding cars, or rerouting. Even though the idea of a driverless car might significantly change our habits, it is necessary to consider a progressive integration featured by a rigorous quality assurance process in order to allow everybody to fully embrace this concept.

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the economic impact of the financial institutions in Burkina Faso. This paper describes the financial institutions in Burkina Faso and compares their products and services to those in the United States. The analysis examines the performance of the commercial banks as a subgroup of the financial institutions and the performance of the financial intermediaries on an aggregate level. The final section summarizes the impact of the financial intermediaries on the economy.
