Alton Ochsner, Sr. (1896-1981) was a surgeon and medical researcher who worked at Tulane University (Chairman, Department of Surgery, 1926 - 1956) and other New Orleans hospitals before he established his own world-renowned The Ochsner Clinic, now known as Ochsner Foundation Hospital. The Ochsner Clinic, which he co-founded, was one of the first to document the link between cancer and cigarette use.

Abstract: A bronze medal commemorating 400 years of the founding of the Real y Pontificia Universidad de México (1551-1951) was accompanied by this note (2 x 3.5 engraved card with inscription) inscribed Dr. J. Castro Villagrana: "A souvenir of the 4th century of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) to Dr. Lapham, Dean of the Medical School of Tulane University from Dr. J. Castro Villagrana with best regards, New Orleans, Jan. 1953." Note: The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Spanish: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) is the largest university in Latin America. As a public research university in Mexico City, the UNAM is widely regarded by many university world rankings as the leading university of the Spanish-speaking world. -- Dr. Maxwell E. Lapham, (1900-1983) was Dean of Tulane University, School of Medicine, 1945-1963. He came to Tulane in 1937 as director of the Division of Medical Extension. During his tenure as a leader, research financing at Tulane School of Medicine grew from $30,000 to $5.5 million in outside grants. As Dean, Dr. Lapham was responsible for the expansion and renovation of the Hutchinson Building, as well as the unification of all Medical School departments at Tulane's Downtown campus. He oversaw the medical school at a time of profound change in medical education. At Tulane, this change was manifested in an expansion of the tropical medicine and public health section, improvements to the medical library, expansion of faculty and research funds and the creation of the Delta Regional Primate Center. In addition to his administrative achievements, Dr. Lapham collaborated on the development of the Friedman-Lapham pregnancy test, better known as the "rabbit test." -- The bronze medal commemorated 400 years of the founding of the Real y Pontificia Universidad de México (1551-1951). The obverse depicts a university coats of arms from the 16th century with two lions and two castles, surrounded by the words: OVUS MIHI NASCITUR ORDO (a new order starts for me). The reverse has a 20th century coat of arms with a scroll above having the text, "Universidad Nacional de México". Choppin, M.D. (1828-1880) studied at the Medical College of Louisiana and served as a resident for two years at Charity Hospital, graduating in 1850. He was Demonstrator of Anatomy in the Medical College of Louisiana (now Tulane University) and also was House Surgeon of the Charity Hospital. He was appointed President of the Board of Health by the Governor of Louisiana, Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls. in 1876. He was a participant in The Battle of Liberty Place, an insurrection by the Crescent City White League against the Reconstruction Louisiana state government on September 14, 1874, in New Orleans.

Abstract: This is an image of the obverse and reverse of a British medal commemorating the Recovery of King George III, 1789. This medal honors the physician Dr. Francis Willis (1717-1807) and Willis himself had medallions struck with the inscription: ‘Britons Rejoice, Your King's Restored’. -- The obverse of this 35 mm white metal has a clothed bust of Dr. Willis facing to the left, three-quarters with the inscription: DOCTOR | WILLIS . Beneath the shoulder: C. I. followed by serpent. The reverse had the inscription: BRITONS | REJOICE | YOUR KING'S | RESTORED | 1789. -- Biographical Note: Dr. Willis was a physician to George III. Dr. Willis had served as a hospital physician in Lincoln, having some success with the mentally ill. Dr. Willis was called to treat George III when he had his attack of madness in autumn 1788 (possibly porphyria). Dr. Willis employed methods of moral management, involving complete physical and psychological domination over his patient such as coercion, restraint and blistering. Abstract: This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal commemorating the Arctic Navigator, Elisha Kent Kane. This medal (51 mm.) is by George Hampden Lovett (1824-1894), an American medalist. (see: Lovett, George Hampden in: L. Forrer: Biographical Dictionary of Medallists, Volume III, London 1907, pp. 480-482). There were three variations of the Dr. E.K. Kane medal. The obverse depicts a bust of Kane facing right with the legend: DR. ELISHA KENT KANT . THE GREAT ARCTIC NAVIGATOR, U. S. N. | above a panel showing his ship Advance trapped in Arctic ice. G.H.LOVETT is below the depiction of the panel. The reverse of the medal shows two figures, one with a rifle wearing heavy coats on and icy ledge near water with an iceberg in the distance view. Biographical information: Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857) was an American explorer, and a medical officer in the United States Navy during the first half of the 19th century. He was a member of two Arctic expeditions to rescue the explorer Sir John Franklin. He was present at the discovery of Franklin's first winter camp, but he did not find out what had happened to the fatal expedition. Dr. Kane was a rock-star type celebrity after his Arctic explorations, dying at just 36 years old. Abstract: This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a medal honoring David Hosack M.D. by the engraver, Moritz Fuerst (1782–1840). Fuerst was an American artist employed by the United States Mint in Philadelphia. This medal was struck by the U.S. Mint in 1820. -- The obverse has the inscription: DAVID | HOSACK M. D. | FURST. F. and features the head of Dr. Hosack facing right with the hair brushed upward. -- The reverse has the inscription: ARTS AND SCIENCE | FURST F. in the exergue. and features many emblems of arts and sciences. There is a cylindrical column, lyre, spade and staff of Aesculapius, along with a mounted sphere, bust, mallet, palette with brushes, scroll, note book, square and compasses and paint tubes. Abstract: Image of the congressional medal of honor for the "Conquest of Yellow Fever" [ Walter Reed Medal] awarded to Roger P. Ames. The collection of medals was donated by the family of Roger Post Ames (Jessie Daniel Ames, widow of Roger Post Ames). Dr. R. P. Ames was a graduate of the Tulane Medical Department (1890). Dr. Ames received several awards posthumously for his work revealing the cause yellow fever. The Camp Lazear research group was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1929 in recognition of the "high public service rendered and disabilities contracted in the interest of humanity and science as voluntary subjects for the experimentation during the yellow-fever investigations in Cuba." Roger P. Ames was added to the group receiving this honor when the original act was subsequently amended on September 2, 1958 (70 Stat. 484; and 72 Stat. 1702). In addition, Dr. Ames was awarded the Order of Carlos Finlay 1928 (medal to Jessie Daniel Ames, widow of Roger Post Ames) on December 3, 1952, Havana, Cuba.

Abstract: This is an image of the obverse of a medal commemorating the founding of The Perse School, the oldest surviving secondary school in Cambridge. The school was founded in 1615 by Dr. Stephen Perse. On the obverse there is an inscription on a ribbon across the Perse school crest: STEPHANUS | PERSE M.D. | FUNDATOI | MDCXV (1615) -- The depiction of Perse school crest that has three dragons, two above and one below an upside down V strip with stylized designs dividing the field. There is a knight's helmet above the shield with a pelican persched atop with its wings spread. Stephen Perse, M. D.(1548-1615) was the founder of the Perse grammar school at Cambridge. He was a senior fellow of Caius College, the fourth oldest surviving College in the University of Cambridge. He bequeathed certain property to be used for a free grammar school to Caius college (1615). Six fellowships and six scholarships founded by Dr. Perse are distinguished by his name at Caius College. Dr. Perse was educated at Norwich school, and on 29 Oct. 1565 was admitted pensioner of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. 1568, and received his M.D.degree in 1582. -- Historical note: The Perse School was founded in 1615 by the will of Stephen Perse, M.D., a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College. Abstract: This is an image of the Cuban Order of Carlos J. Findlay Medal awarded to Roger Post Ames (medals : bronze + silver and gold with enamel ; 5 cm in diam ; 5 cm irreg.). Carlos Juan Finlay (1833-1915) was a Cuban epidemiologist recognized as a pioneer in the research of yellow fever, determining that it was transmitted through mosquitoes. In 1928, President Gerardo Machado established the National Order of Merit Carlos J. Finlay, rewarding contributions to healthcare and medicine. It is the highest scientific condecoration awarded by the Cuban Council of State (discontinued between 1959 and 1981). -- Dr. R. P. (Roger Post) Ames was a graduate of the Tulane Medical Department (1890). He served n New Orleans he served as an ambulance student at the Charity Hospital, assistant house surgeon at Hotel Dieu. He was connected with the United States Public Health Service in New Orleans. He served as a surgeon during the Spanish-American War. He believed that yellow fever was not contagious and that the disease was transmitted by mosquitos. Roger Post Ames served as a contract surgeon served with Major Walter Reed during the famous yellow fever experimentations in Cuba at Camp Lazear. Dr. Ames was in charge of Camp Lazear near Columbia barracks outside Havana. He successfully cared for the majority of the yellow fever cases and contracted the disease during his service. Dr. Ames died at 44 years old on November 15, 1914, at Port Barrios, Guatemala. -- The Order of Carlos Finlay 1928 (medal given to Jessie Daniel Ames, widow of Roger Post Ames on December 3, 1952 in Havana, Cuba). Abstract: This is an image of the obverse and reverse of a medal from the Institut Pasteur. This commemorative medal for Albert Calmette is by the French sculptor, Georges-Henri Prud'homme (1873-1947). The medal has the text: "INSTITUT.PASTEUR | Dr ALBERT·CALMETTE" "ALBERT CALMETTE | MEMBRE DE L'ACADMIE | DES SCIENCES | ET DE L'ACADÉMIE | DE MEDECINE | SÉRUM | ANTI | VENIMEUX | VACCINATION | ANTI | TUBERCULOSE | B.C.G." (bronze-0.8 x 6.75 cm). The obverse has a bust portrait of Albert Calmette with small text . G . PRVD'HOMME . (incuse). The reverse bears dedication and depicts a microscope, cobra and flora. Biographical information: Léon Charles Albert Calmette (b.1863, d.1933) was a French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist, and an important officer of the Pasteur Institute. He discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, an attenuated form of Mycobacterium used in the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis. He also developed the first antivenom for snake venom, the Calmette's serum. In 1919, Dr. Albert Calmette took up the appointment of Sub-Director of the Pasteur Institute of Paris. Prolonged trials of BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guérin) vaccine showed it to be safe and vaccination of very young infants born of tuberculous mothers commenced in 1921. Abstract: This is an image of the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal honoring Albert Schweitzer by Guy Charles Revol (1901-1991) a French sculptor, engraver and medalist. The obverse has a bust portrait with Albert Schweitzer (autograph) and REVOL | MCMLII | DC is under the portrait to the left. The style is modern. The reverse has sheet music with an figure of a man. The edge is hammered and with the, probably MdP, stamp "BRONZE". The Roman year - MCMLII is 1952, the year Dr. Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. -- Biographical Note: Albert Schweitzer(1875-1965) was a French-German theologian, organist, philosopher, and physician. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life", expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, now in Gabon, west central Africa (then French Equatorial Africa). As a music scholar and organist, he studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and influenced the Organ reform movement (Orgelbewegung).
