Abstract
Dr. Stanley Rapoport is a distinguished physician who served as the Chief of the Laboratory for Neurosciences at the National Institute of Health for almost 30 years. He took these photos in 1965 Bogalusa when he volunteered with the Medical Committee on Human Rights to investigate the effects of discriminatory health delivery in Louisiana.

Letter from Mrs. Valeira ("Jack") Hicks to Dr. Stanley Rapoport written a few weeks after he stayed with the Hicks family while preparing a report for the Medical Committee for Human Rights. During his stay in Bogalusa, Dr. Rapoport was arrested for violating a city ordinance against racial mixing in bars, and Mrs. Hicks informs him she has just found out that racial mixing while eating or drinking is illegal "even in your house."

Dr. Rapoport wrote this memoir two years after his first stay in Bogalusa as a MCHR volunteer in 1965, and shortly after a return visit in 1967. The memoir incorporates portions of his conversations with Robert Hicks, A.Z. Young and Charles Sims, and offers a rare snapshot of the Bogalusa civil rights struggle in 1967 when the national spotlight had left.

Left to right: Fletcher Anderson, Dr. Stanley Rapoport, Robert Hicks. Dr. Rapoport recalls: "That's the photo that means the most to me. You never see Hicks smile, he was burdened by all this pressure. It was 1967 and I had a free weekend so I drove back to Bogalusa. Since I'd been arrested at the bar 2 years earlier, Hicks said 'Let's go back to the bar.' So we went back, everybody was there, happy and smiling. Fletcher was there, they told me he'd been in jail. Charles Sims was also there with a gun across his chest, cursing away screaming he'd never talk to a white man again but I was okay."

Abstract
On April 1, 1965, Dr. Stanley Rapoport, a volunteer for the Medical Committee for Human Rights, and Dolores Lawson, an African-American bartender, were arrested at the Blue Room bar in Bogalusa for violating City Ordinance 4-8, which prohibited "the sale of alcoholic beverages to persons of different races for consumption on the same premises." Though the bar had a Black clientele, its owner was white. Dr. Rapoport remembers that the next day, Charles Sims called the bar owner and threatened to burn the bar down if he didn't pay Rapoport's $50 bond.

Abstract
The Community Medical Center was a private hospital in Bogalusa. In his Medical Committee for Human Rights report, Dr. Rapoport noted that the first floor was segregated into "colored" and "white" rooms and the entire second floor was reserved for whites only. He recorded "complaints about pressure to move from a room because a white person needed to occupy it" and that "admissions for Negroes are listed in the hospital without Mr. or Mrs. before the names, while those for whites do have that title." In May 1965, the Community Medical Center turned away activists who had been injured by a white mob while attempting to integrate Cassidy Park.

Abstract
In his 1965 memoir of Bogalusa, Dr. Rapoport vividly describes the dominating presence of Crown Zellerbach in Bogalusa. "The smoke comes from the chimneys of the Crown Zellerbach paper mill...At night it forms a large swathe of grey across starry skies...In the murkeyness of its artificial overcast, the fumes and smells, particles of odor, penetrate fecally into a person's lungs, clothes, home and mind....Crown Zellerbach owns and controls the town. It is the major employer (80%), and its directors run the schools, city commission, and political face of the town."

Abstract
In his report for the Medical Committee for Human Rights, Dr. Rapoport described housing and sanitation conditions in the segregated Black sections of Bogalusa. "The city will not build sewers to some of these sections, and has stopped working on others as reprisals for political activity ( ). There are many houses with outhouses very close to the living quarters, and with no means for waste disposal. These conditions exist in most quarters, and are most apparent in Creosote City, a community owned by Crown Zellerbach of about 50 decrepit dwellings."

Mill houses were shotgun houses, built as workers housing by the Great Southern Lumber Company when Bogalusa was a rigidly segregated company town. The mill houses for Black workers were smaller and lacked the electricity and plumbing provided in housing for white workers.
