title: Effectiveness of an evidence-based weight management pilot program in a primary care setting: A doctor of nursing practice project

Abstract: Background: Obesity has increased in prevalence within the United States in the last 20 years. Detrimental health effects associated with obesity included cardiovascular and metabolic disease, joint issues, and multiple cancers. These health problems have increased costs for third-party payers and society. Objective/Aims: The aim of this project was to promote weight management and healthy lifestyle choices in the population of a primary care clinic through a non-randomized pilot study. In addition the project assessed the feasibility of future weight management programs in that clinic. Methods: A 12-week evidence-based weight management course based in part on the Healthy Eating Every Day program was implemented at Dr. Edwin Walker Medical Practice in Denham Springs, Louisiana. Participants were recruited in a non-random fashion. Weekly classes discussed healthy eating, nutrition, weight, and actions that support healthy behaviors. Outcome measures were weight, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, results from the HPLP II questionnaire, HbA1c, and lipid profile. Weight, BMI, and blood pressure were assessed pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. The HPLP II questionnaire and laboratory data were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: The small number of recruited participants did not allow for parametric testing of outcome measures. Statistically significant improvements in results were seen in the total score of the HPLP ll questionnaire, and in the Nutrition subsection of the HPLP II questionnaire. There were no statistically significant changes in the other outcome measures. Discussion/conclusions: Significant improvement in the HPLP II scores may indicate the participants felt increased confidence in their knowledge and application of healthy lifestyle choices. There were improvements in health status that were clinically significant. This study reveals that while Wagner cannot be exonerated for the blunder that occurred, he cannot be solely responsible either. Abstract: Women are increasingly gaining access to leadership roles that have been traditionally dominated by their male counterparts. Although the access to career ascendancy for women has been afforded in some cases, there still is underrepresentation of African American women in executive leadership roles throughout academia. In this study, the researcher used a mixed methods approach to investigate how the perceptions of African American have propelled or retracted their access to advancement to executive leadership roles within higher education. The first phase consisted of a survey and after analysis, the second phase, grounded theory methods followed. Grounded theory studies aim at constructing a theory based on the data collected. The conceptual framework is based on the Critical Theory, Black Feminist Thought, and Womanist Theory. The study focused on women who hold the positions of dean or upward in post-secondary institutions. The study explored the perceptions of intersectionality and stereotypes experienced by Afi'ican American women during their pursuit, entry, and transition into their executive leadership roles. The research amassed a broad literature base that focused on perceptions, gender stereotypes, barriers to leadership, leadership styles and strategies in higher education, and successful African American women. Abstract: Contemporary studies in the realm of globalization continue to treat nationalism, or the perception of national identity, as a taken for granted feature of social life. This work aims to re-evaluate the conceptualization of national identities in a post-colonial era using secondary data analysis. This analysis takes a focus on a multi-dimensional lensing of national identity and the feelings of national identity in relation to principles of neoliberalism. This study also provides exploratory research to find the relative measures of Civic and Primordial nationalisms within the United States and India. Additionally, this analysis provides a comparative section that examines the existing literature of each nation-state's nationalism and examines whether one nation-state has a higher measure of one particular type of nationalism over another. The results of the findings indicate that the United States does have a higher measure of Civic nationalism than Primordial nationalism and that India, too, has a higher measure of Civic nationalism than Primordial nationalism. When compared to the United States, India did possess a higher measure of Civic nationalism. Conversely, when compared to India, the United States was found to possess a lower measure of Primordial nationalism. Further tests found that the United States' measure of Civic nationalism maintained a weak, positive correlation with an acceptance of neoliberal principles. In the case of India, there was no statistically significant findings to indicate any relationship between India's measure of Primordial nationalism and an acceptance of neoliberal principles. Abstract: American westward expansion dominates the history of the nineteenth century. Two instances of this expansion involved armed rebellion. West Florida was the first armed revolt that preceded American annexation of a formerly European territory. Led mostly by Americans, the West Florida Revolt subsequently led to the creation of an independent West Florida Republic, which was later annexed by the United States. The West Florida Revolt began a pattern of resistance and violence in the Spanish and later Mexican borderlands which eventually made its way to Texas, where other revolutionaries famously won independence for the Republic of Texas. This study explores both revolutions, as well as pertinent events in between each, and makes a connection between the two. Abstract: Academic dishonesty has been an ongoing issue since the sudden increase of technical resources that students have access to. The present study examines N = 31 GroupMe chatrooms from undergraduate students at Southern University. GroupMe chatrooms were analyzed to uncover the reality of academic dishonestyùproviding a deep look into a social world usually off limits to faculty and staff. The two research questions guiding this study are: 1) What are the individual reasons for engaging in academic dishonesty? and 2) What causes academic dishonesty? A mixed methods approach was used to observe and analyze these GroupMe chatrooms. During the qualitative data analysis, chatrooms were converted into text and coded using the software system ATLAS.ti. Reoccurring themes included: solicitation of academic dishonesty, response to solicitation, strain, techniques of neutralization, and ignorance of plagiarism. Significant differences in the solicitation of academic dishonesty were observed for the variables COVID-19, techniques of neutralization, ignorance, and strain. Significant differences were also observed for responses to the solicitations for the variables COVID-l9 and techniques of neutralization. If the courses took place during the year 2020, there was a greater amount of academic dishonesty within these group chats. Academic dishonesty increased if techniques of neutralization were present within the group chats. Solicitations of academic dishonesty increased if ignorance of academic dishonesty was present. Similarly, group chats Where strain was present had more solicitations of academic dishonesty. With each new technological advance, such as GroupMe, new opportunities for the normalization of academic dishonesty arise. As such, educators and universities should first become aware of the students reasoning for engaging in academic dishonesty. title: Distributional assessment of six imperiled freshwater fish species in Louisiana

Abstract: Determining the status of imperiled fishes is crucial for the implementation of effective management practices. The status of fish species in the southeastern US. is particularly important to assess, due to the high rates of imperilment in such a species- rich region. This study applies a modern approach to assess the distribution of six imperiled freshwater fish species in Louisiana using MaxEnt modeling combined with targeted field sampling. I used field sampling to ground-truth the models for each species (Cyprinella camura, Hybopsis winchelli, Pteronotropis signipinnis, Noturus munitus, Etheostoma caeruluem, and Percina lenticula) by sampling both known and unknown localities. Target species were collected at 15 of 28 known localities and 9 of 21 unknown localities. My results suggest that ecological niche models (ENM's) predict species distributions more accurately for certain species than for others. Abstract: There is evidence that power does not corrupt nor ennoble, but allows individuals to be themselves. The aim of this study was to examine how the impact of power on aggression is influenced by differences in LoC. In the current study, undergraduate students (N=69) were classified as having internal LoC or external LoC. Participants were randomly assigned to either the power condition or no power condition. Aggression was measured with a hot sauce protocol. Examination of the means revealed that participants with internal LoC did not aggress differently from the control condition to the power control. Participants with external LoC were more aggressive when they were in the power condition compared to those in the control condition. Abstract: The Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services aims to reduce payments to hospitals with excess readmissions. The purpose of this study was to determine which factors are associated with hospital readmissions, and if there were any differences between Alabama and Louisiana patients' health capabilities. Watershed Health conducted Post-Acute Care intervention programs in Alabama and Louisiana from May 2017 to May 2018 and collected data on 4,581 patients. Using the Health Capability Questionnaire, significant factors were associated with hospital readmissions including owning a car, relying on others for meals, needing help to manage medical condition(s), "somewhat" understanding medical problems, and feelings of hopelessness or nervousness about managing oneæs health alone. Abstract: Amphibian populations all over the world are experiencing a decline in population size, caused principally by factors such as habitat loss, pollution and disease. Much effort has been made to conserve endangered species affected by diseases for example, with immunization and drug treatment strategies. Skin diseases are particularly playing a role in the decline ofamphibians. l adapted a commercially available strain of a L. lactis to the gut environment of the axolotl, Ambysloma mexicanum, and measured the effect on several variables: growth in weight and length, skin regeneration, leukocytecounts, gonadal maturation and the time to metamorphose. The results of the study could provide an alternative in the prevention ofthe decline of amphibians that are threatened by skin diseases. I predicted that the administration olæprobiotics in axolotls would benefit their growth, immunocompetence, and regeneration responses. The results showed a significant difference as a result of probiotic administration in percent lymphocytes in the blood, and an improved regeneration response. Abstract: The origins of Languedocian Catharism have proved as elusive as the movement itself. While a rich body of sources exist for the Inquisition against Catharism, the texts remain silent on the movement's origins and transmission to the west. Historians have variously argued that Catharism was an indigenous movement of Europe, an import from the east, or even a construct in the minds of Inquisitors. Catharism as an eastern import has remained the favored conclusion. Theories on the origins of the Cathars abound, though scholarly consensus has generally favored it as an import from eastern dualism. The traditional narrative holds that missionaries brought Bogomilism, the dualism of southeastern Europe, to western Europe, where it rapidly spread and developed into Catharism. Others insist that merchants traded their heresy alongside their wares, while some point to pilgrims and even troubadours as the carriers. Anselm of Alexandria, a thirteenth-century Italian Inquisitor, states that returning French crusaders brought the heresy to France, and while several scholars therefore point to crusaders as the transmitters, there is little agreement as to which crusade Anselm refers as well as how the heresy made its way to Languedoc. Historians generally agree that Catharism first appeared in Languedoc in the twelfth century, with the exception of a few who argue that the scattered heresies of the early eleventh century mark its beginnings. The eleventh-century heresies were not dualistic and several of the cases have heavy political undertones. The eleventh century does, however, hold the key to the origins of Catharism, though not where most usually theorize. Pope Urban II called for the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont in 1095. This was a watershed moment for the east and the west, and the result was an explosion of cultural transmission. Dualism in the west suddenly appeared after the First Crusade, and the areas it permeated happened to be the areas of crusader recruitment. Abstract: The purpose of the DNP project was to implement a human trafficking education module for the Emergency Department (ED) staff and providers along with implementation of a policy and protocol in the ED to increase provider knowledge of human trafficking and ensure provider compliance with the Human Trafficking (HT) protocol via documentation of red flags and screening questions in the electronic medical record (EMR) along with social services referrals. HT is a public health concern, globally, nationally, and at the state and local levels. Some 20 million adults and children are labor-trafficked or sex-trafficked through force, fraud, or coercion (Powell et al., 2017). Study design was a quality improvement initiative which included a convenience sample of ED providers and staff who completed the HT education training module. Sample size consisted of 163 and 113 for pretest and post-test however, only matched data were utilized for inferential statistics and the sample size consisted of 57 participants. Study participants were educated via a HT Education module placed in Health Stream which included pretest and post-test Qualtrics« surveys. The PROTECT instrument tool was utilized for pretest and post-test surveys. After education of ED staff, the HT policy and protocol which included EMR screening via assessment of red flags and screening questions was implemented. Benefits of this DNP project include enhancement of clinical practice by increasing ED healthcare providers' knowledge of HT, establishing a policy and protocol for screening and referral of HT victims, and providing social services referrals for victims who accept rescue. Abstract: This work is about the use of deep learning methods in order to make predictions about various brain activity and motor movements, based on the brain activity measured by an EEG machine. Over 100 subjects were recorded while performing or while imagining themselves performing various basic motor movements like opening and closing their fists or moving their feet. Brain activity at 64 different locations on the top of the subject's head were measured. This work aims to train deep learning models to predict the movement based on the signal generated by the brain. The applications for such a model that can correctly predict those movements on a dataset of so many individuals, would be beneficial in a lot of medical cases of impaired movement and for "smart" prosthetic devices. In this work, two different types of deep learning models were utilized. First, Conv3D layers were used to learn patterns in the spatial as well as the temporal domain. Secondly, a custom hierarchical model was created, in order to learn patterns of the EEG data from 3 different perspectives. The hierarchical model, in theory, would be able to capture more information about the change in spatial and temporal patterns in the EEG signals while the subjects performed their motor functions. title: Temporal segregation in the presence of wild pigs

Abstract: Due to the actions of modem humans, our planet has been thrust into its 6th mass extinction event where species are going extinct at an alarming rate. One of the major causes of extinctions are invasive species which have been linked to the eradication of many native species, especially on islands and insular habitats. The wild pig (Sus scrofa) is one of the most infamous invasive species that has dispersed around the globe and has the potential to drastically alter the abiotic and biotic factors of the habitats they invade. Introduced to the continental United States in the 1500's, populations can now be found throughout the southeastern states, such as Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, as well as Hawaii and California. In this study, I used a randomized camera trapping survey to assess if, and how, wild pigs influenced the native mammal community inhabiting a managed longleaf pine flatwoods/savanna in southwestern Louisiana in comparison to an uninvaded community in southeastern Louisiana. Overall, I detected sixteen unique mammal species between the two study sites and attention was focused on coyotes (Canis latrans), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), northem raccoons (Procyon lotor), eastem gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), and swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus) along with wild pigs. I found evidence of spatial and temporal segregation between coyotes and their common prey item ù deer, raccoons, pigs, and rabbits. Additionally, there is support that some species are employing spatial and temporal avoidance behaviors that reduce their overlap with wild pigs, such as white-tailed deer; however, coyotes appeared to have a positive association with wild pigs. I conclude that some degree of temporal segregation is being exhibited by some species in the invaded community in relation to wild pigs, but not to the extent that would be expected in the presence of this invasive species., Native mammals; wild pigs; longleaf pine; temporal segregation; invasive species; camera trap

Abstract: How do stakeholders view the barriers and solutions to achieving sustainable development at their university? That is what this thesis seeks to answer. The chief purpose of this short, exploratory, qualitative study, using open-ended interviews, will be to understand and describe the stakeholders' perceptions of sustainable development at several south Louisiana universities. The literature review provides a wide range of explanations for both why and how universities choose initiatives for achieving sustainable development. Additionally, the literature review contains supporting examples of common barriers and solutions to achieving sustainable development. However, this research aims to identify the unique context of Louisiana as an existing gap in the literature. The main points found in the literature review are compared to the interview data collected. The theoretical lenses guiding this research are conflict theory, critical theory, and stakeholder management theory. In summary, there is a politically charged conversation about achieving sustainable development in Louisiana based on the stateæs historical relationship to certain industries. Stakeholders must seek out intentional conversations to address both sides of the issue and to identify a "middle ground". Abstract: Research has shown that a substantial number of students in higher education experience food insecurity while trying to earn a college degree. The root causes of the problem are the combination of a socioeconomically diverse student population and rapidly rising college prices, which has created issues of campus hunger affecting as many as one in two college students, or three times the rate of the general population. This study allowed customers of the campus food pantries to share their experiences through qualitative interviews to capture students' voices, perspectives, experiences, and meanings of the current conditions of food insecurity among college students. The research questions guiding this study are: 1) What are studentsæ perceptions of and experiences with food insecurity? 2) What are some actions and interventions that can be used to alleviate food insecurity in higher education? Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually through the video chatting service Google Meet. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview transcripts to identify recurring themes and concepts shared amongst participants. The primary themes include the normalization of food insecurity, selfù reflective meanings of food insecurity, experiences with food insecurity, the new economics of college, impacts of food insecurity, destigmatization of campus food pantries, and suggestions for improvement. The findings affirm the notion of the high prevalence of food insecurity among college students and support the idea that food insecurity is a multifaceted issue that affects students' overall educational success. Food insecurity among college students was an issue that once went unaddressed; however, a growing body of research seeks to understand why students experience food insecurity. The result of this study adds to the literature on food insecurity prevalence among college students and provides insights from a college student perspective. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between principal's styles, characteristics, behaviors, and practices/keys as they related to intra- district turnover. In this study, the researcher investigated the degree to which school leadership may be contributing to high teacher turnover. The researcher determined the nature of the relationship between principals' styles, characteristics, behaviors and practices/keys and teacher turnover. More specifically, the researcher determined the perceptions of teachers regarding school leadership where intraùdistrict transfers occur. Teacher turnover is at an allùtime high throughout the school districts. Qualified teachers are seeking better working conditions and leaving the profession in massive numbers annually. Others are not leaving the profession but are seeking voluntary transfers to work under leaders whose leadership style is compatible to their perceptions of an effective leader. For this reason, leaders needed to build and sustain learning communities within school districts. It was important to address intra-district turnover by investigating to what degree teacher perceptions of school leadership factored into their decisions to transfer to another school. This study may contribute to educational leadership decisions in practice, research, and policy. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods research design was used to collect the data for the study. This study compared the perceptions of migrating and non-migrating teachers in the district schools in an in-depth way to see if there was an impact on teacher turnover within the district schools and what impact principals had on intra-district teacher turnover. Data were analyzed to indicate teachers' perceptions about their principals' impact on intra-district teacher turnover. Eighty-one teachers participated in the teacher online survey. The survey responses were analyzed and used to select the best participants to interview. There were six teachers selected to interview. These six teachers were selected based on their survey results, years of teaching experience, years at their school, and if they were a migrating or non-migrating teacher. Almost half of the migrating teachers indicated their principals' dominant style to be autocratic, while the other half indicated the democratic style. In addition to meeting professional development goals; aspiring leaders must also have their own motivations to lead, they must understand their motivations through self-assessment and they must be given access to individuals (such as mentors) and opportunities to advance within their school systems. Furthermore, developing one's self as a leader requires that a potential leader actually instill leadership ideology into their own self-concept as they view themselves as leadership material. Leadership personality traits, dispositions and leadership readiness are all influencing factors when it comes to determining if an individual is ready for and motivated to advance into a leadership role. This study explores the motivations of a very specific subset of educators known as Tyro Leaders. The author coins the term, "Tyro Leader" and examines their motivations to advance into educational administrative positions.
