Abstract
The New Orleans Center for the Gulf South (NOCGS) continues its exploration of the Anthropocene highlighting the interdependence of humans, animals, and the earth by presenting AnthropoSonic: Seismic Studies. The Anthropocene is a useful concept—and proposed geological epoch—recognizing the present era in which human-generated forces have altered the earth’s surface, atmosphere, and planetary patterns. AnthropoSonic: Seismic Studies is a two-part series that will allow researchers to explore seismic studies in our region and participate in a sound art workshop that will consider the impact of these studies on plant and wildlife. AnthropoSonic: Reflections with Rebecca Snedeker, Denise Frazier, and Ryan Clarke. Clark Executive Director of New Orleans Center for the Gulf South Rebecca Snedeker, Assistant Director Denise Frazier, scholar, composer and Newcomb Department of Music graduate student Ryan Clarke discussed the AnthropoSonic concept, past events, and Clarke’s short film from Lisa E. Harris’ Live Performance Lab last Spring was shown. Live Performance Lab featuring Cory Diane, Peter J Bowling, and Clementine Hartman. Discussed coastal erosion, climate change, and how the survey impacts local wildlife from West Indian manatees to waterbird nest colonies and blue crabs. Composer and ecological researcher and sound artist Cory Diane presented their research of the seismic studies in Lake Maurepas and the Gulf South Rice’s Whales impacted by anthropogenic sound. The Gulf of Mexico is a site of competing acoustemologies - ways of knowing through sound - with often devastating consequences. In this series, Cory Diane shared their research and creative practice into the soundscape of the Gulf of Mexico, centering the story of one of its most vulnerable populations - the recently named Rice’s whale, a population of whales finally recognized as a species in 2021, the Gulf of Mexico’s only resident whale, one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet, and a community uniquely threatened by the sounds of oil exploration, shipping and industry. Seismic Studies Soundscape Debut featuring Demi Ward. Composer, Newcomb Department of Music graduate student and sound artist Demi Ward debuted their composition from the kayaking trip. Inspired by the absence of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges from the musical and military history canons, this series examines presence and absence in popular historical narratives as well as how they are sustained or disrupted. Part 2: Archives, Libraries, and the Academy. Featuring: Rachel Stein, PhD, Leon Miller, Elizabeth McMahon, PhD and Sakinah Davis, DMA. Held on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Location: Dixon Annex Recital Hall. A lively discussion between academic researchers, librarians, and archivists exploring the relationship between archives that select, preserve, and provide access to historical artifacts, the researchers who seek theses artifacts out and integrate them into a historical narrative that is then collected in article or book form by the library and made available to future readers and researchers. Recording of Introduction and Q&A portion of Hollow Tree film screening event hosted by the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South (NOCGS) at Tulane University on March 7, 2023 in Freeman Auditorium. Hollow Tree is the debut documentary of New Orleans Center for the Gulf South 2019 Monroe Fellow Kira Akerman. The film follows three young women coming of age into a new climate reality in Southeast Louisiana. The event features the film's director and three protagonists, Annabelle Pavy, Tanielma DaCosta, Mekenzie Fanguy, moderated by NOCGS Clark Executive Director Rebecca Snedeker. Land acknowledgment by Dr. Judith Maxwell. Hollow Tree film website: https://hollowtreefilm.com/ Hollow Tree recently won a Jury Prize at its premiere at the New Orleans Film Festival. Creative advisor Ken Burns calls it “extraordinary" and "asks all of us to think differently about the communities in which we live and the environments that we must respect.” The film has been supported by the Sundance Institute, the NEA, and others. Hollow Tree was produced by Monique Walton (Bull, Cannes 2019 - Un Certain Regard, Samuel Goldwyn, Sony), Chachi Hauser (The Rat, Sundance 2019). The film features Dr. Jelagat Cheruiyot, Tulane Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and is executive produced by Jolene Pinder, Visiting Assistant Professor of Strategy, Leadership, and Analytics Minor at Tulane University. This NOCGS event was co-sponsored by the Tulane School of Liberal Arts’ Africana Studies, Environmental Studies, and Native American Studies programs. Location: Greenleaf Conference Room. Jones Hall, room 100A Stone Center. This conversation takes a broad look at race and representation in the historical canon. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges, easily raises questions about race and representation in musical history and, more broadly, European cultural history to say the least. This panel will examine how race, specifically Black people/people of the African diaspora, is and is not present in the popular historical imagination. With Joseph Bologne as our grounding through-line, this conversation will also be informed by the nuances of enslavement, socio-cultural status, social norms in 18th century France and how Bologne’s position and status in French society and the larger historical narrative is complicated by his identity as the son of an enslaved woman and a plantation owner on occupied land.
