The Emerson Bentley collection consists of a diary of both handwritten text and newspaper articles concerning events during the Reconstruction era in south Louisiana, where Bentley worked as a school teacher and newspaper editor, a scrapbook of news articles primarily written by Bentley, and a scrapbook of news clippings kept by Emerson Bentley, Jr.

Emerson Bentley, an Ohio-born school teacher and journalist, lived in Louisiana during the Reconstruction era. His diary consists of newspaper clippings and handwritten notes regarding topics such as the Opelousas Massacre of 1868, race relations, voting, and the Democratic and Republican parties.
