Text, December 8, 1878. Annie McKeene. Story of a Sister of Mercy who had been a Rebel Guerilla. One of Quantrell's Band. Her death in New Orleans from Nursing the victims of the scourge. The story of Anne Harris and John McKeene, in which after John's death during Quantrell's raids, Anne joins the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy in New Orleans, from 1878. The fighting between Missouri and Kansas in the years previous to the civil war is referenced. Anne's name within the convent was sister Celeste and the Published in the Daily Picayune.

Sophie Newcomb Memorial College for Women; Tulane's medical school; Honorary degrees given; World War I; under-paid professors in the 1920s; list for presidents beginning with the 1st in 1847 to Douglas Anderson of 1935-1936; Scholarships and endowments. The article also contains an extensive list of donations to the University dating back to 1889 ending on page 25. Next the University's buildings are described including costs and materials. Abstract
This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal attributed to the French sculptor Raymond Gayrard (1777–1858). The medal was struck in honor of the physicians, Mazet, Pariset, Balley, François and Audourad. The obverse has Latin text: SAEVIENTE IN BARCINONAM | PESTILENTIA MDCCCXXI | signed GAYRARD INV and depicts a recumbent figure, with a civic crown ad armorial shield. A flying spirit of evil pours from a vase and Faith and Hygeia come to her aid. The city walls of Barcelona are in the background. The reverse has two branches, one laurel and one olive, and in the center field the physicians names Mazet, Pariset, Balley, François and Audourad, part of the French medical team that included six physicians and two nuns that were sent to Barcelona to provide assistance. Text on the reverse: V. VIRI. MEDICI | QVORVM | PRIMVS | OCCVBVIT | MAZET | PARISET | BALLY | FRANÇOIS |AUDOUARD | SANCTI |-MONIALES | II | SANCTO | CAMILLO | DEVOTAE | LVDOVICI | XVIII | REGNI | ANN | XXVIII -- Historical Note: The outbreak of yellow fever that struck Barcelona in 1821 followed a typical pattern for the times: a brick from Cuba introduced the disease in the port docks; the epidemic first reached the poor suburbs, and finally the center of the city. It was assumed that at least 20,000 inhabitants died from the scourge, that is a sixth of the total population of the city estimated 120,000. French authorities promptly took emergency measures at land and maritime borders by locking French ports to Catalan vessels and defining a quarantine line along the Pyrenean border controlled by an army 15,000 strong. French medical team including six physicians and two nuns was sent to Barcelona to provide assistance. Long after the epidemic had receded, the Pyrenean quarantine line was maintained by the French authorities for a hidden political purpose: Paris wished to contain Spanish Liberalism, a "revolutionary pest". French troops engaged in the so-called quarantine line were used in 1823 for invading the Spanish kingdom, while French physicians returning to Paris were celebrated as heroes and benefactors of the mankind although they had not provided any serious contribution to the therapeutics or the epidemiology of yellow fever. They were glorified in publications of the time without reserve. This unexpected manifestation of nationalism was welcomed and encouraged by the government of Louis XVIII who felt himself threatened by the liberal opposition. - abstract from [The "plague" of Barcelona. Abstract
This journal contains a description of Psoriasis, an illustrated plan for disposal (during sugar production process) without the use of a strike pan, and a cholera remedy again on August 10, 1871, indicating that Ferry probably recontracted the disease. Ferry copied a letter from the state of Louisiana, in which their debt is detailed. He shared his beliefs about democracy, writing that he was beginning to believe more and more that "l'éclosion de la démocratie dans les nations est généralement un préclude de leur décadence" (the birth of democracy in nations generally prevents their decline). He wrote more criticism of the church, popes, religious disputes, and pulled information from a piece on Christianity in China. The weather changes and the work he completed during the autumn season of 1871 were recorded. Ferry briefly recounted the misfortunes of 1871 on December 31, 1871, what he called the "last day of a bad year", noting the dry weather spells that affected his harvest, among many unfortunate events that took place thorought the year. In January 1872, letters of correspondence between Ferry and Ean T. Gay indicate that Ferry was ready to give up his property to his creditors. There are more weather records throughout 1872. Ferry took an interest in the history of imports and exports of coffee and potatoes, information on planting juste, and how to conserve the sugar cane plant. He wrote the notes of agriculture of Valcour Aime from 1822 to 1858. Numerous entries in this volume express his continuing fascination with astronomy. He included several sailor songs as well. Also included is the description of hydraphobia (or rabies) and a remedy for croup. Illustrations of ships, and pasted pictures of boats and Santa Claus and his reindeer embellish parts of this volume. Some entries are written in English.
