B&W photo, 1970s. Cypress Trees in a bayou in Louisiana. Written on photo: Dressed in feathery green foliage and firmly secured in the soft ground of the swampland, the cypress tree is reminiscent of the great hoop-skirted belles of yesteryear. The trees are often found bordering lakes where their interesting root system can be seen. The so-called cypress "knees" which surround the base of these trees are in fact part of the root system of the cypress, and to push up into the air to breath.
