Grand Isle Seafood Company overlooks this 300-foot wide "water ditch." It is said that the channel originally was a mere track along which a trapper woman by the name of Matune poled her pirogue. Nature itself deepened and widened the narrow pass which even today is still called the "track of Matune"

Once Thriving Town of Balize Has Been Buried by Fickle River But Other New Lands are Being Built up as Soil Carried Down by River Settles at at Mouth. by Walter G. Cowan. The Mississippi River's changes in course, and the effects of this on Southern Louisiana towns and coastlines. The now lost town of Balize, the army enginneers investigations into the Southeastern bayous, Cubit's Gap, dredged passes and new deposits of land are discussed in detail.
