Abstract
View down Common Street from Baronne Street toward Philippa, now University Place. The Medical College of Louisiana was founded in 1835 and became the Medical Department of the University of Louisiana in the mid-1840s. The first permanent home of the Medical Department was the three-story building, seen here at the far end of the block, built in 1844. In 1847 the Medical Department moved to the newer buildings to the right and the Law Department took over the older building. The grounds show tents pitched, which may indicate that this picture was taken during the Civil War. Written on the back: "Photographed by L. P. David, 152 Royal St."
