In this indenture, Joseph (described as a slave) is sponsored by his owner, Louis Houard, as an apprentice to Noel Carriere (described as a free negro) to learn to be a cooper. In French.

This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
