Abstract
Petition submitted by E. Rawle, on behalf of James Thornton, to the Fifth District Court of New Orleans; answer of M[aurice] Grivot, representing the executors of John McDonogh, to the Thornton petition. James Thorton, an enslaved person, represented by E. Rawle, stated that John McDonogh, his deceased master, in his will had bequeathed to him and to several other enslaved persons their freedom. Thornton now petitioned the executors of the succession to emancipate him. The executors, represented by Maurice Grivot, responded that they had no objection to manumitting Thornton or the others named in the will, but they had been unable to do so on account of the suits filed by the State of Louisiana and Maryland and the heirs at large and the writ of sequestration issued by the court, which covered both real estate and slaves. The executors asked that the court inform the plaintiffs of the suits of Thornton's petition and their answer thereto, and they pledged that they would abide by the court's decision in the matter.

Abstract
The bulk of materials comprise receipts, bills of sale, mortgages, and other legal and financial documents that record land and slave purchase transactions of Baptiste Meullion primarily with Alexandre DeClouet, Andrés Duclot, and Charles Vivant. Others appearing in the records are the sisters Clemencia, Eufrocina, and Mariana Hisnard (noted as free mulattoes), Michel Prudhomme, André Neraut, and Jean Soulié, and the enslaved persons Lindone, Judith, and Jeffy and their children Jeffy, Louisa, and Eliza, Carlos, Aggy, and Peter. The transactions were effected in St. Landry Parish, New Orleans, and the German Coast of Louisiana. Included among these is a receipt for Baptiste Meullion's purchase of enslaved children from another Meullion from the German Coast, possibly some of his family members. The earliest item records Luis Augustin Meullion's manumission of Baptiste Meullion and his mother, Maria Juana, in consideration of her service to Luis's father Antonio Meullion and her recent conversion to Catholicism, and on the condition that they remain in service to him during his lifetime. An agreement for Mariana Meullion's rental of a tract of land known as Longueville is also included, as are certificates or licenses for Baptiste Meullion's carriages and a report of damage to his cotton shipped to LeHavre, France. Abstract
Legal and financial papers of the Johnson family for the years 1840-1848 include slave bills of sale, deeds of emancipation, freedom papers, deeds of conveyance, receipts, and other legal and financial documents. The papers are chiefly those of William Johnson, his mother-in-law, Harriet Battles, and Harriet's mother, Jane Bush (also seen as ""Jenny Bush""), all free persons of color.

Two documents relate to the emancipation of Julia Ann and her two daughters, Laura and Margaret. A slave bill of sale, dated April 29, 1840, confers ownership of Julia Ann, Laura, and Margaret from Miles Kelly to Harriet Battles. The second document, dated June 11, 1840, is a deed of emancipation freeing Julia Ann, Laura, and Margaret through the power of attorney of Harriet's mother, Jane Bush. A certification of Jane Bush's power of attorney on behalf of Harriet Battles, dated June 21, 1842, is also present.

Other documents related to Jane Bush include a freedom paper, dated June 11, 1840, certifying that Jane has lived as a free woman for more than twenty year's time and a freedom paper for Jane Bush signed in Indiana on June 21, 1842.

Documents related to Harriet Battles include: a freedom paper, dated June 26, 1840, signed by Horace Gridley; a receipt for Harriet's passage from Louisville, Kentucky to Cincinnati, Ohio, dated May 15, 1843; two receipts; and a city tax receipt dated September 23, 1842.

Papers of William Johnson include: a receipt for the sale of an enslaved man named Jim, dated February 29, 1844; a deed of conveyance from Franklin Beaumont to William Johnson for the Bellevue property, dated 1840; a notice, dated February 23, 1842, to Major Henry Chotard to pay William Johnson tuition due to him for the education of his sons; an indenture between Eliza Cochran and William Johnson, dated March 27, 1844; a license to William Johnson for keeping a dog within the city limits, dated May 3, 1844; and various tax receipts for Johnson's taxable properties and enslaved persons.

Abstract
In this indenture, Jean Baptiste (described as a young man of color and slave for and until the age of 21 years) is sponsored by his slaveholder, Nicolas Joly (described as a free man of color) as an apprentice to Francois Bierre (described as a free man of color) to learn to be a bricklayer.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.

Abstract
Model form for census, submitted by Matthew Flannery to the City Council of New Orleans. The model was the form that Flannery proposed to use in compiling data for a census of New Orleans. He planned three categories of inhabitants--whites, free people of color, and enslaved persons--further dividing each of these into males over sixteen years and under sixteen, and females over sixteen and under sixteen.

Abstract
The folder contains legal documents created during the years 1822-1829, which relate to the emancipation of Harriet Battles and Ann Battles Johnson by Gabriel Tichenor.

The first document, dated May 16, 1822, is a notice and acknowledgment of Tichenor's intention to emancipate Harriet Battles. The document was drafted in the Parish of Concordia, Louisiana and signed by Gabriel Tichenor, Judge Edward Broughton, and Deputy Sheriff A. Stanbrough.

The second document is a deed of manumission, dated May 1826, for Harriet Battles and her young daughter Ann Battles. The document is drafted and signed in Ohio by Gabriel Tichenor, Tichenor's lawyer Nathanial Wright, Judge George P. Torrence of Hamilton County, Ohio, Isaac G. Burnet, mayor of Cincinnati, and the court clerk. In essence, this deed, re-emancipated Harriet and legally manumitted her daughter Ann through the Court of Ohio.

The third document of Gabriel Tichenor (now claiming citizenship in Natchez, Mississippi) notifies the State of Mississippi that he has given his Cincinnati lawyer, Nathanial Wright, full power of attorney and informs the court that Wright has emancipated Harriet and Ann Battles. Through this document, Nathanial Wright also offers testimony that Tichenor has manumitted both Harriet and Ann Battles, through his attorney. The mayor of Cincinnati, Issac Burnet, also offers testimony of Nathanial Wright's right to manumit Harriet and Ann Battles on Tichenor's behalf.

The fourth document, dated December 21, 1827, is a receipt for the sale of two enslaved persons--"a negro girl named Julia aged about 21 years, and a child Laura aged one year"--from James Ferguson to Jenny Bush, Harriet's mother. Julia and Laura were later purchased and emancipated by Harriet Battles in 1840 (folder 17 of the William T. Johnson and Family Papers contains the act of emancipation), and it is likely this receipt belonged to Harriet. The receipt is attached to newsprint from a page of classified advertisements in a New Orleans newspaper.

The fifth item of the folder, dated June 11, 1829, is a handwritten receipt for Harriet Battles for the purchase of flour and lard.

Abstract
In 1806, Will and testament of Maria Olivares, widow of Joseph Galvez of New Orleans. She declared that she was born in the Canary Islands, the legitimate daughter of Andres Hernandez and Josefa Olivares. She was a resident of Barataria, where she owned land and some sixty head of cattle. Her properties included two enslaved persons, a Bautista (a male of 55 years of age) and Maria (a female of 35 years of age), and the latter was to be freed after the death of Mrs. Galvez. She appointed as the executors and universal heirs of her estate Maria Dauberville, widow Bouligny, and Luis Bouligny. In Spanish.

A certificate verifying that Charles-Pierre Lambert was baptized at age two by Jean Baptiste-Joseph Lemaire and that Madame de St. Georges gave him to Monsieur Lambert, his natural father, who promised to set him free. The entries primarily discuss the weather in Natchez, Mississippi, news of enslaved persons and runaways, Johnson's business activities, and news in the Natchez community. Other topics include horse racing, farm animals, regional and national news, elections, and hunting.

Incidents of violence in Natchez discussed in this volume of the diary include shootings, fights, and suicides. The diary also records social engagements with members of the McCary and Miller families, who were families of free people of color.

Johnson's social activities with Colonel A. L. Bingaman, a local politician, orator, and slaveholder who was involved in a relationship with a free woman of color, are also discussed.

Other topics discussed include farm management, horse racing, hunting, and a cholera outbreak.

Johnson records his business and social activities with other free persons of color, including members of the McCary, Hoggatt, and Winn families. The volume also includes a poem about mourning. The poem was probably written by a member of the Johnson family following William Johnson's death in 1851.

Multiple entries discuss news of and Johnson's reactions to the 1844 United States presidential election between James K. Polk and Henry Clay, during which the issue of slavery was an issue of intense debate.

An entry from Thursday, September 19, 1844 discusses yellow fever and the health of the Natchez and Woodville, Mississippi communities. On Wednesday, December 11, 1844, Johnson writes about the purchase of a piano at auction for $62.00.

Johnson's business and social activities with Colonel A. L. Bingaman are also recorded in the volume.

The last pages of the diary were used as a cashbook, with page 112 being a scan of a loose cashbook entry. Page 113 shows a loose receipt for goods bought at auction.

In this indenture, Bazile (described as a mulatto slave of 12 years of age) and Boss (described as a negro slave of 13 years of age) are sponsored by Valerien Allain as apprentices to Louis Simon (described as a free man of color) to learn to be joiners. In French.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.
