Abstract
Edward N. Marsh was a private in the 52nd Massachusetts Infantry. The 52nd arrived in Baton Rouge to occupy the city on December 17, 1862. In a letter to his brother and sister, written on a sheet of paper from a ledger he “liberated” from a Baton Rougean’s home, Private Marsh describes the scene in Baton Rouge, including his unit's landing, soldiers' taking items from homes, the town's deserted appearance, and the conditions of "contrabands," slaves who fled to the Federal encampments in Baton Rouge.

Abstract
Model form for census, submitted by Matthew Flannery to the City Council of New Orleans. The model was the form that Flannery proposed to use in compiling data for a census of New Orleans. He planned three categories of inhabitants--whites, free people of color, and enslaved persons--further dividing each of these into males over sixteen years and under sixteen, and females over sixteen and under sixteen.

Text, October 19, 1864. Governor Allen Executing His Plan. Enrollment of Negroes in Rebel Army. Account of Rebel Governor Henry Allen's proposed plan suggested to the Secretary of War - "to arm and discipline the negroes in order to make soldiers for the Rebel army." Claims that there will soon be the "first confederate colored regiment of infantry of Louisiana." The remaining paragraphs are extremely racist in tone. Published in the New Orleans Tribune.

Abstract
Primarily contains correspondence relating to the administration of John McDonogh's estate. Items include a receipt issued to Andrew Durnford for paying the principal on his loan, a 46-page memorandum concerning the disposition of McDonogh's estate, and a catalog of McDonogh's Baltimore properties, which were sold at auction to benefit public education. In the memorandum, McDonogh discusses the employment, moral education, and repatriation of enslaved persons as well as his financial and personal relationship to Durnford.
