B&W photo, 1970s. Winter Quarters. Newellton, La. Written on photo: This 19-room house was built on one of the last Spanish land grants to be given in Louisiana. A gallery with five large square columns fronts the house. Originally a three-room hunting cottage used as "winter quarters," the home was taken over by Grant's troops during the Civil War. La. 604, three miles southwest of Newellton.

Hwy. 10 just off the Great River Road at St. Francisville Louisiana, is a magnificently resotred antebellum mansion built in 1835. The house, a harmonious combination of Louisiana, Georgian and Classic Architecture, contains beautiful period furnishings. It is situated at the end of a great avenue of oaks flanked by lush gardens of century old camillias and other shrubs and trees planted by the original mistress of the house. Rosedown is open daily except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

B&W photo, 1970s. Oaklawn Manor, Franklin, La. Written on photo: Built in the early 1800s by Alexander Porter, Oaklawn is an elegant example of Louisiana's plantation heritage. The beautiful mansion stands on grounds containing live aoks said to have been growing when Columbus discoverd America and reputedly the largest oak grove in the nation. Gardens were landscaped by a French landscape architect. The mansion itself is well-preserved and contains rare antique furnishings of the period in which it was built. Located three miles off U.W. 90, east of Franklin, deep in south central Louisiana. Sugar plantation. Greek Revival, handmade brick.

B&W photo, 1970s. Oakland Plantation, located near Natchitoches, La. Written on photo: This was the home of J. Alphonse Prudhomme. The 8th generation of Prudhommes now live on the same site. The present plantation is part of a land grant given in the 18th century to Doctor (Docteur du Roi) Jean Baptiste Prudhomme. Built in 1818, it has hand hewn cypress with adobe walls of hair and mud. A ten foot gallery surrounds the home, 80 feet long in back and 70 feet long on the sides, each room open onto the gallery. The lower floor museum houses a collection of the early physician's equipment and hand turned drilling tools. This plantation, with its beautiful avenue of live oaks, was the scene of the movie "The Horse Soldiers," starring John Wayne.

Was a 2-story, 4 bay farm house with 2 rooms on each floor and 2 exterior chimneys, with one story galleries at front and rear. Additions in 1873-74 added entablature and capitol posts, wide side hall and double parlor.

The plantation was established in the 1700s by a freed slave woman, who built the African House to represent the structures of her homeland. Melrose has some of the oldest buildings of African design in the U.S. Melrose is open to visitors by appointment and features a cluster of antebellum structures.

Written on photo: Madewood Plantation's graceful Ionic coumns were hewn of cypress cut on the plantation grounds during construction fo the greek revival home between 1840 and 1848. They form a dramatic backdrop for live performances held during the annual Madewood Arts Festival. Ballet, music, mime and puppet shows are among the varied performing arts celebrated during the festival. Madewood is located on La. 308 about 2 miles south of Napoleonville, Louisiana.
