Abstract
Petition of the estate of Widow Dara (or Darrea) Costanza to free the enslaved persons Carmelite (described as a negro wench of more than 30 years of age), her son William (described as the son of Carmelite, above 13 years of age), and Lucien (described as a young mulatto orphan boy of about 11 years of age). The petition is made by the executor of Costanza's estate, a free man of color named Pierre Fildeé.

Photograph of a mourning group for General John Bell Hood and his wife. The card was sold by distinguished Confederate veterans and others for the benefit of the family of Hood, who died in 1879 in the Yellow Fever epidemic, his wife (Anna Marie Hennen), and one child. Bell and his wife are represented by portraits and the lost child by an empty chair.

Abstract
Margaret Gaffney Haughery was born in Ireland and came to Baltimore in 1818 with her Catholic parents. She was orphaned in 1822, and after spending her remaining childhood years in the care of relatives, she married Charles Haughery in 1835 and moved almost immediately to New Orleans. Charles died early in their marriage, as did their only child, Frances. Margaret devoted the remainder of her life to charitable work, using the profits of a dairy business she owned to aid poor and displaced persons in New Orleans, especially orphans and those affected by the Civil War. She later operated a bakery, using the proceeds for charitable purposes. Her death was greatly mourned in New Orleans. Within a short time of her passing, a statue was erected in her memory. It is the first public monument in the United States honoring a woman. The form of this brooch is typical of certain examples. It bears the likeness of a loved one, and clippings of that person's hair, woven in a checkered design, forming the back of the brooch.
