In this indenture, Charles Dacqueny (described as an orphan boy of color of six years of age) is sponsored by his guardian, Nathan Morse, as an apprentice to George Hunter to learn the trade and mystery of all the various branches of his manufactures.

Indentures in which at least one party was a free person of color were selected from among all of the indentures available. This identification was made either by the designation of an individual as a free person of color in the record or when a phenotypical description like "quadroon," "mulatto," or "Negro" was given and there was no information to indicate the person was enslaved.

Mandat de Payment (order to pay) $10 to Jean Victor, a free man of color, one month's city pension for the needy issued by Augustin Macarty, the Mayor of New Orleans. The Mayor of New Orleans issued these pay bills or cash vouchers to authorize the City Treasurer to remunerate individuals for services rendered to the City. The mandats were printed forms with pertinent data filled in. Each was signed by the Mayor and usually by the person to whom it was issued, or a designated representative. In French.

Mostly undated legal and financial records including account sheets, inventories, testimonies, court records, and letters, ranging in date from approximately 1817 to 1871. Items relating to free people of color include an authorization given by Louis Morin to his wife, Marie Suzette Metoyer, for the partial lifting of a mortgage; a testimony of Francois Metoyer, fils, in an affair between Athanasse Denis and Mr. Helysse; and a statement of debts owed by Rose Metoyer to Dr. A. Douglas. The bulk of the items are in French.
