Abstract
The first volume of the Register of Free Colored Persons Entitled to Remain in the State was produced by the New Orleans Mayor's Office between 1840 and 1856. Free people of color who were not born in the City of New Orleans, or who were born in the Parish of Orleans and were emancipated after birth, were required to register with the Mayor's Office as free people of color.

The register as a whole is comprised of four volumes created between the years 1840-1864. The roster lists the individual's name, sex, color, age, occupation, place of birth (parish or county, state, country), date of arrival (this section is blank in the majority of entries), additional remarks, and the date that the information was recorded. Information found in the remarks column identifies the name of the emancipator or the name of the person who verified a free person of color's free status by witnessing or notarizing the act of emancipation.

The roster is arranged in chronological groups for the years 1840-1856. The names are recorded alphabetically by the first letter of the last name, or as in some cases, the first letter of the only given name.

Note that this list is an index to a transcription of the register, published by Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane. Page numbers given in the index refer to the published transcription and not to the manuscript register.

Volume 1 is in French and English.

Abstract
Antoine Doussan, New Orleans, to Auguste Doussan. The Doussans were an émigré French family who came to Louisiana in the wake of Napoleon's downfall. The patriarch, Antoine, a medical doctor and former soldier under Napoleon, managed the family's cotton and sugar plantation in West Baton Rouge Parish as well as French-resident members' financial affairs in Louisiana. Auguste Doussan was the younger brother of Antoine Doussan. He practiced medicine in Grasse, France, and married Louise Perrin, who was a relative of the Allain family of Louisiana.Antoine Doussan relates business transactions. Antoine mentions 'Dr. Patrick' as the purchaser of Auguste Doussan's plantation.

Armand Duplantier, Jr., St. James Parish, assures his cousin Antoine Frédérique Allard Duplantier, Vorion, France, that he is happy to hear about the visit of Amélie Duplantier and Mme. Avart to Le Plantier, France. The writer relates that he will be sending the recipient insects through Mr. Dupuis rather than Bernard. He adds that he is also sending a rattlesnake (and some other reptiles if he can procure them in time), and he asks for mounting pins, as they are hard to come by in Louisiana.
