Abstract
Sub-Title: Containing 2600 Fathoms in Length by 1850. Inset(s): Plan of the Environs of New Orleans, Six Miles in Circumference; [Lower Mississippi River Valley from Illinois to to the Gulf of Mexico]; engraving, "Esplanade or Place of Arms" [Jackson Square]. The first expansion of the city of New Orleans beyond the boundaries of the Vieux Carre was to the west into an area known as Faubourg St. Marie (St. Mary). This map shows that the first few streets of the present-day central business district of New Orleans were also laid out in a grid. Published in the year of the Louisiana Purchase, this map features an illustration depicting the enlightenment of Europe by the newly-expanded United States. A seated Roman warrior gazes upward toward an eagle in flight. The bird carries in its beak a United States flag being fifteen stars, the number of states in the union in 1796. Some experts believe the cartouche signifies the United States enlightenment of Indians. According to this interpretation the figure represents a highly classicized rendition of Native Americans.

Abstract
B/W photo, 1930s. Written on photo: The famed equestrian monument of Andrew Jackson by Clark Mills in the New Orleans "Place d'Armes." Unveiled in 1856 in the heart of old New Orleans, this monument is the centerpiece of one of the most beautifully symmetrical architectural settings in the world. Funds for the monument were largely donated by the Baroness Pontalba, whose celebrated "first apartments" flank both sides of the square. The inscription in the base "the Union must and shall be preserved" was effaced during the Civil War and chiseled back permanently by the Federal occupant General Ben Butler. The St. Louis Cathedral faces the square with the cabildo and the Presbytere to the right and left. The other side is occupied by the Mississippi river. The square was laid out when New Orleans was founded by Bienville in 1718.

Completed in 1850 by the Baroness Pontalba, daughter of Don Almonester y Roxas who erected the Cabildo and St. Louis Cathedral. Wrought iron balconies have the monogram AP representing the families Almonester and Pontalba.
