Papers relating to free people of color include a court testimony by Joseph Metoyer regarding the discovery of a stray horse in Cloutierville, and two documents relating to the emancipation of Louis Monet (also spelled Monette) by Marie Louise Lecomte (Widow Porter). Business papers of Celestin and Michel LaCaze--both free Creoles of color of Isle Brevelle in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana--consisting of bills and receipts for various goods. Most of these bills and receipts indicate the status of the LaCaze brothers as "mullatres libres" or "h. c. l." ("homme de colour libre"). Includes several bills for Rosalie LaCaze, the mother of Michel and Celestin and a slave of Jacques LaCaze. Transactions between the LaCaze brothers and Auguste Metoyer are also represented.
