Abstract
B&W photo, 1970s. Oakland Plantation, located near Natchitoches, La. Written on photo: This was the home of J. Alphonse Prudhomme. The 8th generation of Prudhommes now live on the same site. The present plantation is part of a land grant given in the 18th century to Doctor (Docteur du Roi) Jean Baptiste Prudhomme. Built in 1818, it has hand hewn cypress with adobe walls of hair and mud. A ten foot gallery surrounds the home, 80 feet long in back and 70 feet long on the sides, each room open onto the gallery. The lower floor museum houses a collection of the early physician's equipment and hand turned drilling tools. This plantation, with its beautiful avenue of live oaks, was the scene of the movie "The Horse Soldiers," starring John Wayne.

Text, January 4, 1802. Election of tutor for the minors of the Post of Natchitoches and dependencies by Felix Trudeau, Civil and Military Commander of the post. The elected tutor was named Sieur Joseph Derbanne. Contains names of other applicants as well.

B&W photo, 1970s. African House at Melrose Plantation, near Natchitoches, Louisiana. Written on photo: The African house is one of several buildings original to Melrose Plantation. The plantation was established in the 1700s by a freed slave woman, who built the African House to represent the structures of her homeland. Melrose has some of the oldest buildings of African design in the U.S. Melrose is open to visitors by appointment and features a cluster of antebellum structures.

Primarily notarized documents including slave bills of sale, marriage contracts, land transactions, and financial records signed in 1840 by the Natchitoches Parish notary public. Papers relating to free people of color include the marriage contract of Joseph Metoyer and Marie Lodoïska Llorens; the mortgage of Philippe Valsain Dupré; and the financial statement of Émile Dupard. All but one document in French.
