The plantation was established in the 1700s by a freed slave woman, who built the African House to represent the structures of her homeland. Melrose has some of the oldest buildings of African design in the U.S. Melrose is open to visitors by appointment and features a cluster of antebellum structures.

B&W photo, 1970s. Historic Roque House, Natchitoches, Louisiana. Built circa 1700s. Written on photo: One of the oldest homes in the Cane River area of Northwest Louisiana, this is an example of an Acadian cottage. Originally located in a rural area near Natchitoches, it was moved and restored as a museum and located in town. Written on accompanying pamphlet: "The Roque house dates back to the 1700s. It is the only one of its type and is unique in that the structure consists of hand hewn cypress beams and uprights. The spaces between the uprights are filled with mud and mixed with spanish moss. this home was originally located 8 miles south of Natchitoches on Cane River Lake. It was moved by truck in October of 1967. The weight of the house, without roof and fireplace, is 55 tons and is one of the five unaltered pure colonial French dwellings left in Louisiana. The actual builder is not known, but was probably built by Augustine Metoyer, planter and philanthropist, and the great grandfather of Madam Aubert Roque. The house was unoccupied for 30 years and used as a hay barn until it was saved by Museum Contents, Inc. The cypress shingles on the roof were added and the double fireplace was made like the original chimney and from the original chimney bricks. Admission 50 cents Donation. Downtown River Bank. Written on photo: All interior fittings and furnishings (except the pews) were imported from France. The spiral staircase leading to the choir is unique in that it has no center support. Rectory built in New Orleans in 1885, desmantled, shipped to Natchitoches by boat and then reassembled.
