Abstract: This is an image of both the obverse and reverse of a British 20th century bronze medal commemorating the 800th anniversary of St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1923 with a portrait of William Harvey. On the obverse is a bust of facing left with the inscription around the edge: WILLIAM . HARVEY . 1578 -- 1657. The obverse has a small bust facing right of Rahere in the center field surrounded by a laurel wreath tied with a bow at the bottom. The inscription is around the image: TO COMMEMORATE THE 800 ANNIVERSARY * 1123 * ST. BARTHOLOMEWS HOSPITAL * 1923 * . Abstract: This is an image of the obverse and reverse of a silver medal awarded to T. Darby by the University College of London. -- The obverse has a depiction of a laurel wreath surrounding the text T. T. Darby MATERIA MEDICA 1865-6 3rd Prize; above reads 'University College London'; beneath reads 'Third Prize'. The reverse features Britannia with laurel wreath, shield and scroll. Text on reverse reads 'CUNCTI ADSINT MERITAEQUE EXPECTENT PRAEMIA PALMAE', UCL's motto, which translates to 'Let all come who by merit deserve the most reward'. Date in Roman numerals is the year of the founding of the college, MDCCCXXVII (1827). -- Historical note: University College London (UCL), founded in 1826 and London University, is a public research university in London, England. Medicine was one of its foundation faculties. The motto is: Cuncti adsint meritaeque expectent praemia palmae (Latin) - translation: "Let all come who by merit deserve the most reward" -- Note: Honoree may have been J. T. Abstract: This is an image of the obverse and reverse of a bronze medal with a portrait of a distinguished British lady, Charlotte Queen of Great Britain, consort of George III. This commemorative medal is for the Medical Society of London, founded in 1773, by Kirk. The obverse has the text: CHARLOTTA . DEI . GRA . MAG . BRI FRA ET HIB . REGINA | and has a bust of Charlotte facing left with KIRK F. in small letters beneath the bust. The reverse has the text: SALUTI | AUGUSTA and below a line at the bottom SOC . MED . LOND . | INSTITUTA | MDCCLXXIII. There is a rendering of the goddes, Hygeia, daughter of Asklepios, the god of healing and medicine holding a bowl to a serpent, and flame. KIRK F. in small letters along the edge. The bowl or cup of Hygeia is a modern emblem for pharmacy, used interchangeably with the Rx symbol. The serpent is a symbol of resurrection and the bowl is a symbol of medicine. The Medical Society of London was the initiative and instrument of Dr. John Coakley Lettsom. He founded the Society in 1773. The motto is “Saluti Augustae” - (For the Welfare of London). The Medical Society of London was established as a forum for physicians, surgeons, apothecaries and accoucheurs to meet and exchange medical intelligence. John Kirk (1724-1776) was a London medalist.

Abstract: This item contains a signature of Anthony White (b.1782, d.1849), a British Surgeon. He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (admitted 1803), and served in the office of president in 1834 and 1842. He was also the Surgeon to the Royal Society of Musicians. He was the first to excise the head of the femur for disease of the hip joint, a procedure considered to be heroic at the time, causing a controversy. He published: Treatise on the Plague. Abstract: This item contains a signature of Sir Felix Semon (b.1849, d.1921), a distinguished figure in the early development of laryngology. He was an astute researcher of laryngeal pathophysiology and an active participant in laryngological scientific societies. Felix Semon was a talented doctor and was one of the most esteemed laryngologists in London for 35 years (1875-1910). Abstract: This item contains a signature of Sir Astley Paston Cooper (1768-1841), a man from Norfolk, Englad and a student of the eminent John Hunter, was an acclaimed surgeon of his time. He was Demonstrator in Anatomy at St Thomas's Hospital in London and later was a Lecturer in Anatomy and Surgery. He became Surgeon to Guy's Hospital in 1800 and in the same year was elected a Fellow to the Royal Society. He was surgeon to three successive British monarchs and received a bestowal of Baronetcy. He made historical contributions to otology, vascular surgery, the anatomy and pathology of the mammary glands and testicles, and the pathology and surgery of hernia. Name: Mackenzie, Morell, 1837-1892
Abstract: This item contains a signature Sir Morell Mackenzie (b.1837, d.1892), a British physician and pioneer of laryngology. He was one of the founders of the Journal of Laryngology and Rhinology and of the British Rhino-Laryngological Association. He is known for three books, which became the founding stones of the new specialty of laryngology: The Use of the Laryngoscope in Diseases of the Throat (1865); Growths in the Larynx (1871); and Diseases of the Nose and Throat (1880 and 1884). He treated the Emperor Frederick III for an affection of the throat of which he ultimately died. The German physicians who had attended the prince since the beginning had diagnosed his ailment on 18 May as cancer of the throat; but Morell Mackenzie insisted that the disease was not cancerous. A quarrel raged between Mackenzie and the German physicians who published an account of the illness, to which Mackenzie replied by a work entitled The Fatal Illness of Frederick the Noble (1888), the publication of which caused him to be censured by the Royal College of Surgeons. Abstract: This item contains a signature of Sir William Bowman, (b.1816-d.1892) an English surgeon, histologist and anatomist known for research using microscopes to study various human organs. Striated muscle fine structure began to be really understood following a comprehensive survey of the matter carried out by William Bowman in the late 1830s. He linked the glomeruli to the tubules, described the parietal epithelial cells, the basement membranes, and (with Robert Todd) apparently first identified endothelial cells. His work, "On the Structure and Use of the Malpighian Bodies of the Kidney", was awarded the Royal Medal. His collaboration with Todd led to the publication of the five-volume "Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man" (1843–1856) and "Cyclopaedia of Anatomy and Physiology" (1852), which detailed their research on microscopy and histology, relating minute anatomical observations to physiological functions. Abstract: This item contains a signature of John Tyndall (b.1820, d.1893), a British 19th-century physicist from The Royal Institution of Great Britain an organisation devoted to scientific education and research, based in London. Tyndall also published science works which brought 19th century experimental physics information to a wider public. He was a professor of physics at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London. His positions at that institution were Professor of Natural Philosophy (1853-1887); Superintendent of the House & Director of the Laboratory (1867-1887); and Honorary Professor (1887-1893). The note mentions William Hill Darker (d.1864), an engineer and scientific instrument maker of 9 Paradise Street, Lambeth and Louis Jules Duboscq (b.1817, d.1886) a French instrument maker known in his time for the high quality of his optical instruments in Paris. Abstract: A letter from Joshua Leavitt writing as Corresponding Secretary of the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, to the Committee of the British and Foreign Anti-slavery Society. In his letter, Leavitt encloses "a communication from our Committee addressed to the Lord Palmerston" regarding the Amistad Case which the Committee "deemed necessary to be laid before the British Government" He outlines the claim by the United States government that the Amistad Africans were legally enslaved in Cuba and a statement by Antonio G. Vega, the Spanish Consul at Boston, declaring that there "was actually no law in Cuba against enslaving Africans recently imported, but that such Africans were sold bona fide & lawfully held as slaves." The Committee feels it necessary "to place a copy of this Declaration of Vegas, certified under the seal of the court, in the hands of the British Government" and encloses document to the care of the British society "that you may present them in such manner as may appear best calculated to further the great [illegible] we have in view." Leavitt writes that "We learn with much interest of the proceedings of your worthy deputation to Spain" and hopes the Amistad Case may have some influence. Leavitt makes sure to mention that Joseph Sturge is a welcome visitor to the United States.

Abstract: A letter to George W. Alexander from Joshua Leavitt writing on behalf of the Amistad Committee to express its "sincere thanks for the kind interest [they] have taken in their case, & for [their] considerate zeal in urging the subject upon the attention of the Spanish government." The letter contains information regarding the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court and reports that the Committee is now desirous of recommendations for the Africans and their restoration home. The letter brings up several points regarding the Supreme Court case before the British government, particularly a statement by Antonio G. Vega, the Spanish Consul at Boston, regarding official forms about the shipment of the Africans in Cuba, and Spanish laws. The Committee states that it will seek more information regarding "the country from which these Africans came, the practicality of reaching it, provisions for such a journey, etc..." The Committee will also write to the Governor of Sierra Leone, John Jeremie, and David Turnbull, the British Consul to Cuba. Leavitt states that perhaps officers of the British Navy may be of assistance in attempting to return the Africans home. The Committee originally seeks to invoke the aid of the U.S. government to return the Africans, but inquire about aid from the British government in the instance that the U.S. fails.
