Abstract
The daybook of Anna Johnson, born a free person of color, contains records of business accounts and entries for the day-to-day management of Peachland Plantation between October 1900 and December 1921. Entries in the daybook are mostly organized by the name of business associate, though there are some entries detailing daily activities by date. Types of activities include purchases for food items, farming business, leasing of land on Peachland Plantation, and notes on crops.

Abstract
The Johnson family notebook contains records of money spent and received for the farming of cotton, clothing purchases, compensation for farm hands, and various other household and plantation business dating from January 1872 to July 1876. The book also includes several daybook entries.

Some entries in the book were created by Anna Johnson, while others were probably created by an unidentified member of the Johnson family.

The book itself is a published volume, with every other page entitled Workingman's Time Book for the Month of.

Abstract
The folder contains copies of lesson plans on mental arithmetic. The lesson plans probably belonged to Anna, Alice, Josephine, or Katharine Johnson, who were schoolteachers of Natchez, Mississippi, born as free persons of color to Anna Battles Johnson and William Johnson. The lesson plans come in six parts, with some of the lesson installments named and dated.

Abstract
The notebook of Kate Johnson is approximately dated 1864-1874 and contains her verse, verse composed by her sister Anna Johnson, and verse composed by noted poets, such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Lord Tennyson. Sadness, death, and longing for the happier times of childhood are prominent themes in Kate Johnson's verse. Anna Johnson's verse explores themes of love and regret.

Abstract
The notebook of the Johnson family, free people of color, chiefly contains record of money given and received between members of the Johnson family and their business associates dating from January 1856 to August 1863. Several daybook entries are also included. Entries written in 1856 were probably created by Richard M. Johnson, William Johnson's son, whose signature is present on the first page of the notebook. Other entries were probably created by Richard's sister, Anna Johnson. The notebook includes several blank pages.

Abstract
The folder contains school materials that likely belonged to Anna and Alice Johnson, who were both born free persons of color to Ann Battles Johnson and William Johnson and worked as school teachers in Natchez, Mississippi. The materials are mostly comprised of lesson plans and writing exercises. Included are several drafts of a report on John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker poet and abolitionist; copies of lesson plans on natural philosophy and practical arithmetic; an 1890 valedictory speech; a report on cotton, and a Decoration Day address. A school roster belonging to M. E. Shumaker is also represented.

The folder contains undated tax documents of Anna Johnson and her estate following her death in 1922. The materials were probably created between the years 1850 and 1922 and have been given approximate dates.

Tax documents relating to Anna Johnson include city tax receipts, county tax statements, state tax receipts, and notes on Anna Johnson's taxable property.

Other documents represented include a state and county tax receipt for Emma Hoggatt and her children, who were descendents of free people of color; a fragment of a tax receipt with the name Robert H. Wood written on the back; a tax receipt for the estate of Anna's father, William T. Johnson; and a receipt for Sheriff O. Metcalfe.

Abstract
The notebook of the Johnson family, free people of color, dates from January 1854 to October 1866 and contains record of money spent on shoes and clothing for the Johnson family children and servants, record of wages paid, and several cash book entries for expenses, dated 1866.

Entries for clothing and other household purchases were probably created by Ann Battles Johnson, who was a free woman of color and the wife of the barber and diarist William Johnson. Entries for the renting of stables and the purchase of clothing, dated 1866, were probably written by Anna Johnson, a free woman of color and the daughter of Ann Battles and William Johnson. Many of the pages of the notebook are blank.

Abstract
Miscellaneous literary manuscripts are comprised of handwritten poetry (mostly copies of poems by noted poets) and songs belonging to William Johnson, a free man of color, and his son, Byron Johnson, born a free person of color. Also included is a typewritten copy of Fredrick Douglass' 1888 ""Address to the Colored Citizens of the United States""; a school report on the life of John Greenleaf Whittier; a handwritten copy of ""De Senectute""; and a handwritten prayer. Some of the materials dating after 1872 were most likely those of William Johnson's daughter, Anna Johnson, who was a schoolteacher in Natchez.

Abstract
The oversize folder contains teacher's certificates, a list and oath of taxable property, an address, and a map belonging to the Johnson family, who were free people of color and their descendents.

The three teacher's certificates (dated 1873-1875) belonged to Anna and Josephine Johnson for their efforts teaching primary education to freed African Americans in the Natchez Public School System.

The list and oath of taxable property for Robert McCary, a free man of color, is dated May 1, 1866 and includes the value for four lots of land, a clock, furniture, and a piano from the estate of William Johnson.

The broadside contains a printing of a speech entitled "Address Delivered Before the Good Samaritan Society, of Natchez Miss., on Their 12th Anniversary, Tuesday July 11, 1876." Theodore H. Greene delivered this speech to the African American community of Natchez, Mississippi in celebration of their 12-year anniversary of freedom from the institution of slavery.

The colored map was printed by Rand McNally & Co. of Chicago in 1875 and shows the railway system of Missouri, Kansas and Texas.

Abstract
Legal and financial papers of the Johnson family for the years 1900-1935 include tax receipts, teachers' licenses, receipts for property sales, notices, orders to pay, checks, and receipts for goods.

Documents created between 1900 and 1921 belonged to Anna Johnson, a schoolteacher who managed her family's estate. These items include: tax receipts; a teachers' license (dated April 14, 1900); a receipt for attorney's fees for her sister, Katherine Johnson's, last will and testament (dated July 1, 1901); receipts and statements concerning transfer of property; checks from Anna to family members and various businesses; and a contract for Peachland Plantation (dated December 13, 1921).

The remaining documents were created between the years 1923 and 1935 and predominantly relate to Anna Johnson's nephew, Dr. William R. Johnson. These items mostly document the settlement of Anna Johnson's estate following her death in 1922 and William's subsequent management of Peachland Plantation.

Items belonging to Anna's sister, Alice Johnson, her brother, Clarence Johnson, and Emma Hoggatt are also represented.
