Abstract
Text, October 1, 1849. The City of Dubuque. Text reads: Sometime in the year 1774, Julian Dubuque, a mineralogist emigrated to the province of Louisiana, and settled among the Sac and Fox Indians, near the site of the present city of Dubuque. In 1788, the Indians gave Dubuque a portion of their lands, with the mines it contained and in October, 1796, he presented a petition to the Baron De Carondelet, Governor General of Louisiana, praying for the grant of a tract of land situated on the west bank of the Mississippi, seven leagues in front by three in depth, and divided by known boundaries. The concession was made by the Baron. In 1804, Dubuque sold part of the land to A. Chouteau for a large sum of money. The claim was recognized by the Indians in a treaty made in 1804, and subsequently by a Board of Commissioners in 1806. Dubuque resigned in the uninterrupted possession of the land from 1788 until his death, in 1810, working the mines and cultivating the soil. He died in possession,
