Dr. James Thomas Nix Jr., received the rarely awarded doctor of philosophy degree in surgery from the University of Minnesota Saturday.
The University of Minnesota is one of the two recognized medical centers in the United States that awards this degree—the other being the Uniyersity of Pennsylvania. Minnesota's medical school is affiliated with the Mayo clinic at Rochester, Minn.
The New Orleanian is the only doctor to receive the degree from the University of Minnesota this year and the 10th doctor ever to obtain the degree from the school.
Dr. Nix, who is 31, received his bachelor of science degree from Loyola in '37, and he was graduated from the Louisiana State university medical school in '40. He interned at Charity hospital for a year then did postgraduate work in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a resident at the Mayo clinic for a year before entering the Army in 1943. Dr. Nix served as a captain in the European theater of operations and returned from service in 1946. For the following three years he was a resident and assistant at the Mayo clinic.
