Brandishing checks totaling $1550, Dr. Emmet Irwin, the toastmaster, announced that the money had been subscribed dur ing the banquet and declared the gesture to be "one of the finesi tributes" that could be paid to s medical dean. The movement was launched by a former medical student who had been financially assisted in completing his medical schooling, Dr. Irwin explained. Called Most Popular
Dr. Smith, who up to September 1 was athletic director and head of the department of anatomy at Tulane university, ''is called the most popular faculty member among the alumni of the medical school," Dr. Hiram W. Kostmayer, dean of the Tulane medical school, declared.
