Dr. Walton R. Akenhead, pro-lessor of medicine and head of the department of medicine at Louisiana State university school of medicine since 1954, died Saturday afternoon at Charity hospital. He was 49.
His death was attributed to lung cancer. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon from L. A. Muhleisen & Son, 2929 Metairie rd., at a time to be announced.
A native of Columbia, Miss., Dr. Akenhead resided at 107 Homestead dr., Metairie. He was graduated from LSU in 1940, and served his internship at the US Marine hospital in Seattle, Wash., from 1939-40.
He was an assistant in medicine at the LSU school of medicine from 1940-1941.
.SERVED IN WAR II During World War II, Dr. Akenhead served four years as an officer at the Camp Claiborne Station hospital. He entered as a ward officer in July 1941. From June, 1942, through September, 1945, he served as chief of medical service at that hospital.
Following his discharge from the Army. Dr. Akexihead became assistant professor of medicine at the LSU school of medicine. He was named associate professor of medicine in July, 1949.
In March, 1954, he became pro-lessor of medicine and head of the department of medicine at LSU.

SENIOR PHYSICIAN He was senior visiting physician, LSU medicine, at Charity hospital since 1950, and chief of medicine, LSU unit, at Charity since 1954.
He also had served as assistant physician, LSU medicine, at Charity from 1940-41, and visiting physician from 1945-1950.
He was a member of the Orleans Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, New Orleans Academy of Internal Medicine; American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, American Heart Association, and Louisiana Heart Association. He was treasurer of the Orleans parish unit, American Cancer Society, from 1956-57.
He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Elizabeth Faus-old; three daughters, Patriota, Sherry and Linda; two sons, John and Robert, and his mother, Mrs. Lydia Brooks of Ocean Springs, Miss. PHOTO: DR. WALTON R. AKENHEAD
