Touro Infirmary has announced a grant of $343,850 from the John A. Hartfdrd Foundation, Inc., of New York—the largest grant received in the1 history of the hospital. -
It will be used over a three-year period for study of cardiovascular physiology and disease. Ralph W. Burger, president of the foundation, and Dr. John C. I Mackenzie, hospital director, announced the grant, which is the third, received from the foundation. In 1954, the foundation gave the hospital. $66,666. Four years later, another grant of $31,395 was received by the hospital.
The latest grant will permit the extension of three major areas of research. Studies Slated
The over-all Touro research program, co-ordinated by Dr. Sam Threefoot, is aimed at achieving a better understanding of the function of the heart, blood vessels and some of the sub-| stances carried by the blood.
Dr. Threefoot will conduct a study to provide a better explanation of the role the various essels, such as arteries, veins, capillaries and lymphatics, play ri the accumulation of fluid-called edema—in the limbs, chest and abdomen.
Dr. Sam Nadler, head of 'ouro's biophysics department, will continue his search for a rapid method of estimating blood volume, which will permit accurate emergency replacement of blood needs in cases of hemorrhage, severe burn cases, and cases where an artificial kidney is used.
The third area provided for in the grant will enable a better correlation of the electrocardio-grapHic and vectocardiographic diagnostic tools with the variations from ordinary normal daily activities such as eating, smoking and exercises. Illustration Department
Other diseases, including congenital heart disease of children/will be studied. This study will be handled by Dr. Manuel Gardberg, principal investigator of the cardiac research laboratory at Touro.
The grant also provides-for the establishmen| of an instrument shop for tlie'development and maintenance of instruments and equipment used in various researchr projects, and a medical illustration department. The prime ~ function of this department is to assist in the presentation and publication of-results of research to both the scientist and the layman.
Dr. Mackenzie said the hospital's board of managers is "grateful to the Hartford Foundation for the outstanding support given to our research activities in the past, the present, and the future."
