Louisiana State university researchers have developed a new fat emulsion for intravenous feeding which can be used without producing dangerous side effects.
The new development, used successfully on animals, is important because fat releases twice as many calories as proteins and carbohydrates.
In surfical cases where patients are very sick and are in need of food energy fast but are unable to be fed by mouth, the new fat emulsion can sustain life.
Dr. Isidore Cohn Jr., the project researcher, said the discovery is now ready to be tried on human beings.
