Dedication of the LSU medical school wing, in use since July and (for library purposes) before that, was a gratifying occasion for the alumni of faculty and graduate and for Louisiana medicine in general. Its addition of 96,000 square feet of floor space virtually doubles the area available. More than that, of course, it permits installation of certain special research equipment, such as an electron microscope, brain-wave machine and (eventually) color-television equipment.
The library itself, with 38,000 volumes, occupies two floors; there is an auditorium with 650 seats; a cafeteria, isotope laboratory, etc. Expansion of research will be one of the foremost benefits from the new construction. Built in front of the original school (which also underwent some remodeling), and connected with it on all floors, it actually represents a new and striking "front" to an integrated structure.
As has been noted before, its completion ties in with a unique array of medical facilities in the general vicinity.
