Biographical Information
St. Cyr Hypolite Metoyer (active 1841-1862) was a ferry boat operator, soldier, and free man of color from Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Antoine Joseph Metoyer (1778-1838) and Marie Pelagie LeCourt, who were free people of color and landowners of the Cane River settlement in Natchitoches Parish. He operated a ferry in the village of Cloutierville and later served in the 1st Regiment of Native Guards at New Orleans during the Civil War.</br></br>Théodora Chagnon (active 1849) was a free woman of color born to Félicité Grappe, also a free woman of color. She married Louis Dominique Metoyer, a free man of color born to Marie Marguerite LeComte (born 1781?), a half-French, former enslaved person, and Dominique Metoyer (1776-1838), a free man of color and founder of the Cane River community in Natchitoches Parish. Her sister was Marie Claire Chagnon (active 1849), who married Louis Silvy, a free man of color.</br></br>Marie Doralize Derbanne (active 1824-1849) was a free woman of color born to Louis Gaspard, a white plantation owner of Natchitoches Parish. In 1824, she married Philippe Valsain Dupré, a free man of color and carpenter born in 1805 to Joseph Dupré, a white plantation owner, and Marie Adelaide Mariotte, a free woman of color and granddaughter of Marie Thérèze Coincoin (1742-1816?). Marie Doralize and Philippe Valsain had a daughter named Marie Dénége Lisida.

Various records including financial statements, letters, slave transactions, mortgages, and procurations from 1849. Papers relating to free people of color include the account statement of St. Cyr Metoyer and a donation of land by Marie Doralize Derbanne to her daughter, Marie Dénége Lisida Dupré. Three documents concern the sale of land rights by Théodora Chagnon to her sister, Marie Claire Chagnon, after the succession of their mother, Félicité Grappe/ These comprise a proxy form with a letter by Louis Dominique Metoyer, a procuration, and the act of sale. All but four items in French.
