Biographical Information
St. Cyr Hypolite Metoyer (active 1841-1862) was a ferry boat operator, soldier, and free man of color from Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Antoine Joseph Metoyer (1778-1838) and Marie Pelagie LeCourt, both free people of color and landowners of the Cane River settlement in Natchitoches Parish. He operated a ferry in the village of Cloutierville and later served in the 1st Regiment of Native Guards at New Orleans during the Civil War.</br></br>Émile Dupard (active 1824-1838) was a free man of color and blacksmith who appeared in Natchitoches Parish in 1824. He was the son of Victoire Mulon, a free woman of color of New Orleans, and, brother of Marie Arthemise Dupard, wife to François Metoyer (1784-1862). In 1829, he married Marie Rose Cephalide Balthazar, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Balthazar-Monet and Marie Rose Metoyer (daughter of Louis Metoyer, 1770-1832). The couple's children were Eugenie Virginia (born 1838) and Elisa (born 1826).</br></br>Marie Perine Metoyer Rachal (1803-1864) was the daughter of Marie Marguerite LeCompte, a free woman of color, and Dominique Metoyer (1776-1839), a former enslaved person and free man of color. She married Pierre Mission Rachal (born 1800), the son of Jean Baptiste Barthelemy Rachal (1761-1847), a white planter, and Marie Françoise LeCompte, his half-French, freed slave.</br></br>Jean Baptiste Dominique Metoyer (known as Dominique) was a businessman and free man of color born to Dominique Metoyer, a former enslaved persona and free man of color, and Marie Marguerite LeCompte, a free woman of color. Dominique Metoyer (1776-1839) was the son of Marie Thérèze Coincoin (1742-1816?), a former enslaved person, landowner, and founder of the Cane River settlement, and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer (1744-1815), a white planter and businessman. J. B. Dominique Metoyer was a principal in the mercantile firm, Dupré, Metoyer & Company, which included his cousin, Emanuel Dupré, a free man of color, and two white businessmen, Nicolas Gracia and Charles F. Benoist. In 1807, he married Emanuel Dupré's sister, Marie Louise Doralise Dupre (born 1807), the daughter of Joseph Dupré and Marie Adélaïde Mariotte (born approximately 1780-1783). Marie Adélaïde's grandmother was Marie Thérèze Coincoin. In 1816, he married Adelaïde Rachal, a free woman of color and Creole (described as a quadroon). Together the couple had at least one child, a daughter named Athanase Vienne Metoyer (1813-1833).

Description
Primarily notarized documents including mortgages, lists of debts, minutes from family meetings, testimonies, and land transactions, signed in 1844 by the Natchitoches Parish notary public. Papers relating to free people of color include the lease, affidavit, note (financial), receipt of Joseph François Metoyer, and the affidavit of Manuel Llorens. Also present is the rendering of Jean Baptiste Dominique Metoyer's account to his daughter, Dame Emile Colson (Marie Aglae Metoyer). All but three documents in French.
