Biographical Information
Jean Baptiste Meullion (1763 or 4-1840), also known as "Baptiste" and "Juan Bautista," was a free man of color and a propertied slaveholder, who operated a cotton and sugar plantation on Bayou Teche. Though born an enslaved person to François Cheval of St. Charles Parish and the slave Maria Juana (also known as Marie Anne Meullion), he and his mother were freed in 1776 by Luis Augustin Meullion, a white slaveholder. Jean Baptiste married Célèste Donoto, and the couple had four children: François, Antoine Donot, Marie Denise, and Suzanne Bellazaire, who also went by "Bellazaire."

Bills of sale for Jean Baptiste Meullion's sugar account with Miramond O'Duhigg Company, a merchant firm in New Orleans, and for his shipping account with A. Ozere. Also present is a letter from M. Donatfuxe containing news from his village. In French.
