Biographical Information
Jean Baptiste Louis Metoyer (1800-1838) was a free man of color and propertied slave owner born to Louis Metoyer (1770?-1832), a former enslaved person, and Marie Thérèze LeComte, a half-Native American, former enslaved person of the LeCourt household. The parents of Louis Metoyer were Marie Thérèze Coincoin (1742-1816?), a former enslaved person and property owner, and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer (1744-1815), a white plantation owner and businessman.</br></br>Émile Dupard (active 1824-1838) was a free man of color and blacksmith who appeared in Natchitoches Parish in 1824. He was the son of Victoire Mulon, a free woman of color of New Orleans, and brother of Marie Arthemise Dupard, wife to François Metoyer (1784-1862). In 1829, he married Marie Rose Cephalide Balthazar, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Balthazar-Monet and Marie Rose Metoyer (daughter of Louis Metoyer, 1770-1832). Their children were Eugenie Virginia (born 1838) and Elisa (born 1826).</br></br>Pierre Metoyer, fils, (1806-1906) was a free man of color and ferry boat operator born to Pierre Metoyer (1772-1833) and Marie Perine Lecomte. His father was the son of Marie Thérèze Coincoin (1742-1816?) and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer (1744-1815). His wife was Marie Deneige Metoyer (1806-1889) with whom he had one son, Ambrose.</br></br>Noel Coindet (born 1803) was the son of Jacques Antoine Coindet, a white native of France, and Marie Rose Metoyer, a free woman of color and the widow of Jean Baptiste Balthazar-Monet. In 1828, he married Marie Natalie de Mezieres.; Magdelaine Lecomte (active 1828) was the daughter of Marie Suzette Lecomte, a free woman of color.

Primarily notarized documents including affidavits, bonds, land sales, slave bills of sale, and promissory notes signed in 1828 by Jean Pierre Marie Dubois, notary public of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Affidavits record the testimonies of Marie Suzette Lecomte and her daughter, Magdelaine, in a case of assault and battery against Augustine St. Denis, a free woman of color. The affidavit and bond of Augustine St. Denis is also present. Several documents concern another case of assault and battery, that of Joseph Robles against Émile Dupard, a free man of color. A bond posted by Jean Baptiste L. Metoyer, a free man of color, ensures his appearance in court to testify as a witness in the case; his affidavit is also present. Bonds posted by Joseph Marie Robles and Émile Dupard ensure their appearance in court. Other documents include a bill of sale transferring an enslaved person from Mr. Lourpayrac to Mr. Noel Coindet, a free man of color, and a land sale conveying property on the left bank of the Brulee River to Pierre Metoyer, fils. The bulk of the documents are in French.
