Biographical Information
Oscar Dubreuil (born 1817?) was a free man of color, Creole, and native New Orleanian who settled in the Cane River community of Isle Brevelle. Dubreuil arrived at Isle Brevelle as a bachelor and schoolteacher and soon married Marie Celina Rachal, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Espallier Rachal and Marie Susanne Metoyer. Dubreuil was an entrepreneur, tailor, billiards hall operator, merchant, ferryman, and undertaker. Dubreuil conducted business as a merchant with Dupré, Metoyer & Company.</br></br>Marie Louise Emma Dupré (1848-1929) was the daughter of Emanuel Dupré (born 1810) and Marguerite Metoyer. She was also the great-great granddaughter of Marie Thérèze Coincoin and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer through a plaçage between Joseph Dupré and Marie Adélaïde Mariotte Metoyer.

The first volume of Anonymous Daybooks contains the accounts of a free man of color, Oscar Dubreuil, for purchases made at a general merchandise store in Isle Brevelle, Natchitoches Parish, La. (possibly Dupré, Metoyer & Company) for the years 1856 and 1857. Included are Dubreil’s accounts with free families of color, including the Balthazars, Monettes, Metoyers, Melancons, Meullions, LeCourts, and Badins/Badons. Loose items in the book include a 1931 letter from Emma Dupré to her brother, Wilson Dupré, an advertisement for Kentucky Colonel Plug Cut Tobacco, and fragments of accounts. In French.
