Biographical Information
Pierre Thomas (active 1769-1784) was a free man of color and soldier of New Orleans. He was married to Marie Jeanne. Their daughter, Mariana Thomas, was married to Noel Carriere, a free man of color. In 1769, he joined the Spanish militia under Simon Calpha. Thomas and his son-in-law led special expeditions to capture runaway slaves in 1782 and 1784.</br></br>Pedro Joseph Piernas (1729-1790) was a soldier and administrator born in San Sebastián, Spain. He left Spain in 1765 with his ten-year-old son, Joseph, and arrived in New Orleans with Governor Ulloa in 1766. In 1768, Ulloa ordered him to assume command of the Spanish forts at the mouth of the Missouri River. He took charge in 1769, only days before he was ordered to evacuate Louisiana because of the French Creole rebellion. In 1770, General Alejandro O'Reilly appointed him lieutenant governor of Spanish Illinois, where he served until 1775. He remained thereafter with army headquarters in New Orleans, acting as governor during Governor Gálvez's absences in the war, 1779-1782. In 1785, he became commandant of the Louisiana Fixed Regiment. In Louisiana, he married Félicité Robineau de Portneuf in about 1771, and the couple had one son, Luis, in 1780. He died in New Orleans in 1790.</br></br>Felix Herwig Kuntz (1890-1971) was the son of Rosemonde Elizabeth and Emile Kuntz and the brother of Emile N. Kuntz. He was an avid collector of documents, paintings and furniture during and after the Great Depression. The documents in this collection were items that Kuntz collected for his own personal interest.

Statement of accounts and order to pay signed by Leonardo Mazange, clerk of the Cabildo. The statement of accounts was for salaries in the amount of seventeen pesos six reales a day for company of sixteen mulatto and free black militiamen, who were dispatched by Pedro Piernas, Commandant of Louisiana, to capture a group of fugitive slaves (cimarrones). The company was led by Lieutenant Pierre Thomas, a free man of color. Leonardo Mazange ordered the City Treasurer to pay the Captain of the black militia thirty-five pesos five reales, as authorized by the Cabildo. In Spanish.
