Biographical Information
Charles Butler was a free man of color and Catholic of New Orleans. His wife was a woman named Rachel Butler, who is described as an Indian woman. The couple had a son named Charles Thornton Butler (born 1817). Felix Herwig Kuntz (1890-1971) was the son of Rosemonde Elizabeth and Emile Kuntz and the brother of Emile N. Kuntz. He was an avid collector of documents, paintings and furniture during and after the Great Depression. The documents in this collection were items that Kuntz collected for his own personal interest.

Baptismal certificate of Charles Thorton Butler of New Orleans. Father James Lesne, Rector of Saint Anthony's Chapel in New Orleans from 1840-1854, certified that he baptized Charles Thornton Butler, born May 16, 1817 at Lafourche, the legitimate son of Charles Butler, a free man of color, and his wife, Rachel Butler, who is described as an Indian woman.
