Biographical Information
Enrique (active 1795) was a free man of color who lived in the city of New Orleans. In 1795, Enrique paid a fee for his booth or stall on the levee, thus it is likely he conducted business from there.</br></br>Juan de Castanedo (born 1765) was elected City Treasurer by the Commissioners of the Cabildo in 1793 and served through the end of the period of Spanish domination.</br></br>John Minor Wisdom (1905-1999) was a liberal Republican from Louisiana and a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit during the 1950s and 1960s, when that court became known for a series of decisions crucial in advancing the civil rights of African-Americans. He attended Tulane Law School and was later an Adjunct professor of law there from 1938 to 1957. The documents in this collection were items collected by Wisdom.
