Biographical Information
Jane Desham (active 1818) was a free woman of color of Philadelphia and the mother of Hampton Smith.</br></br>Robert Wharton (1757-1834) was a hatter, Schuylkill Fishing Company member, alderman, and mayor of Philadelphia.</br></br>John Minor Wisdom (1905-1999) was a liberal Republican from Louisiana and a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit during the 1950s and 1960s, when that court became known for a series of decisions crucial in advancing the civil rights of African-Americans. He attended Tulane Law School and was later an Adjunct professor of law there from 1938 to 1957. The documents in this collection were items collected by Wisdom.
