Biographical Information
The Metoyers were a family of free people of color of creole heritage who were plantation owners, slaveholders, merchants, and business owners in the prominent Cane River community of free people of color in Isle Brevelle, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The family are descendants of Marie Thérèze Coincoin (1742-1816?), a former enslaved woman, slave owner, and property owner, and Claude Thomas Pierre Metoyer (1744-1815), a French-born, white plantation owner and businessman. Marie Thérèze Coincoin and her ten children with Metoyer are credited with founding the Cane River community. The Metoyer family built their family plantation homes and purchased the freedom of relatives and area enslaved persons to join their community.

While not much is known about Adeleda Metoyer (active 1831-1874), she seems to have been a free woman of color of creole heritage who lived in the Cane River community and engaged in the mercantile business, purchasing general goods and sending goods by railroad freight.

It is unclear who Toussaint Metoyer (active 1845-1851) is, though he was probably a free man of color of creole heritage who worked in the mercantile business with Adeleda Metoyer. It is possible that he is Pierre Toussaint Metoyer (1782-1763), a son of Marie Thérèze Coincoin, who never married. Both were possibly related to Philomene Metoyer (active 1873-1874), presumably a free woman of color of creole heritage and married woman associated with the mercantile business.

The three Metoyers possibly conducted business with Selén Metoyer (active 1837), Pantaleone Morine (active 1854), and A. S. Dupré.
